Description I talked about this in my last journal, but I'll say it briefly again. This is based on the song Dear Sarah, the text of which is a letter written by a union major to his wife about a week before he died in the battle of Bull Run. The beauty of his message combined with the haunting music that went with it inspired me to draw this- he watches over her, just as he promised to do. Please ignore some errors with the arms/hands, as I think this piece was more about subject matter. XD

Here are the excerpts from the (rather longer) letter that were used in the song-

My very dear Sarah:

The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days -- perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more....

I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing -- perfectly willing -- to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt....

Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.

The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me -- perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my litle Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults, and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness....

But, O Sarah! if the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath; as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for me, for we shall meet again....

This always made a tear come to my eye. It's such a beautiful letter...and to think that he died a week later...so heartbreaking.

Beautiful, expressive piece. <3 I'm not sure I remember the journal, but my memory's dead anyway. I adore the background tone of the piece--the overall composition is gorgeous.

This has been sitting in my deviation notices demanding a comment, and I still can't get out more than three sentences. >.o;; <3 Eh. It's pretty all the same, and for all the reasons it should be~

Gorgeous. So very sad and sweet...
I love the Civil War musical... My local theatre company performed it a year or two ago. I was so moved I had to run out and buy the soundtrack. ;_;

Thanks...

I didn't know there was a musical...what's it about (more specifically, I mean- I know it's about the Civil War XD).

Really, it is just about the Civil War. It's not like most musicals that have an ongoing storyline-type-thing. They have quotes from famous people (Lincoln, Soujourner Truth, Frederick Douglass) and then follow each up with a song. So it's more summing up the mood of the war than the story, I guess.

*sniff* The blood shed then was indescibably painfull, more than ever before. To know that this man died with them in battle...

War is a cruel, cruel thing. Is what we acheive worth it? Worth thousands, maybe millions of people's lives? T.T

Sometimes it is all we can do to make sure that they didn't die for nothing and continue in our cause.

But the end results of our country remaining whole were worth it. Otherwise we would be in a slave filled Confederacy here in Georgia.

True, but...

The blood shed on this war was unparraeled by the previous wars. 4 hours in Shiloh killed more people than all the other U.S. wars before. COMBINED!

About 23,000 people were stolen, wounded, or captured.

Also captured on photographs. On newspapers.
