Description Just a little something I made last year. As I was watching the Muppets' Toyota Highlander commercials in February, I noticed there was a lot of Sweetums featured. Since those videos are in crystal-clear HD, there's great potential from an artistic standpoint.

When I first started drawing Muppets, I did Sweetums based on the Palisades Toys action figure . That was until a closer look during those commercials. You'll notice Sweetums' clothes are  more complex than you'd think . Basically, it's just a robe, but there are so many patches, ripped fabric, strands of fur/hair, stitches, clothing underneath the robe, etc. So I went ahead & tackled drawing that monster!

Instead of doing the whole body on one page, I separated each body part: the head & body were on 18x12 sheets of paper & the left arm, both feet & his hand with Robin were done on regular 8x12. The hard part with that is there are very limited pictures of puppeteers wearing the Sweetums costume with the head off. That's not the Henson Company's fault, it's just one of Disney's many stupid/terrible decisions with handling the Muppets. (their "no such thing as puppeteers" approach) And any pictures that do exist are either in black-&-white , head shots or too far away . So I tried the best I could with the limited stuff I had. The only easy indication to make out are his head, hands & feet.

The coloring was the toughest/funnest part of this piece. The tough half came from that when I put it together in Photoshop, I left it all in linart. Looking back, I maybe should've colored each part separately then put together. I think I did it so I'd still have the same colors & not choose a different shade by mistake. The fun half was because how many shades I could use. & like I said, his clothes have lots of different material on them so great to experiment. I also put everything together EXCEPT his hand holding Robin. That I saved last since it's an easy paste, no fur hanging from the sleeve to connect. Besides, I knew I had to have Robin in his giant hand when I started anyway . They've got a nice friendship .

& finally, no, I didn't intend to do this as a rest in piece picture for John Henson's passing. I started doing this before his heart attack. It was just a big coincidence & I didn't wanna post it for either being too soon & because the 2 of them are smiling. PS ignore all those colored circles on the top right side. I kept those just in case of another drawing & I wouldn't be guessing what colors I used.

Comment & enjoy!

I have to admire the sheer level of detail you put into this, particularly in Sweetums' rags. Great work, Zach

That's why I did it. I also noticed that artists mostly stick to the action figure instead of the physical puppet itself. Hopefully this will start a change. It's more than just a robe with 2 sleeves, afterall!
