Description Bathysoma lutkeni is the second-oldest known lampridiform (e.g. the opah, ribbonfish, etc), dating back to the lower Paleocene of Sweden.  It was once thought to be a menid moonfish, then a disk-shaped cutlassfish.  Eventually, similarities between it and other fossil lampridiforms, such as those of the extinct family of Turkmenidae, were documented.
