Description By the death darting eye of the cockatrice! This is Exalius, a character that I've had around forever but only just now gotten around to making a ref sheet for, due to inspiration from *SicPuppy . There's half a dozen different designs for him floating around DA and Elfwood, but I think I finally settled on one I'm happy with. Here's his stats, so I don't just RAMBLE pointlessly...

Name: Exalius
Species: Cockatrice (or Basilisk, if you prefer. DO NOT argue the semantics of this with me)
Age: Early thirties
Height: 7'2 (Ex is VERY tall, size comparisons on the chart are not appropriate)
Origin: Haiti
Occupation: Priest (Vodoun)
Clothing: Lots and lots of random jewelry and piercings. They don't have to follow what I tossed on him here. He also usually wears various patterned loincloths and waist-wraps, I just omitted them in the ref sheet because I was too damned happy with those thighs to cover them up. Skulls are a common theme as well, though I've not included them here.
Weapons: He carries around a staff topped with a bird skull of some sort, wrapped in various feathers and beads and whatnot that I haven't included here. It's not necessarily a weapon, though. He's more liable to rely on his tail and claws. While he does have the "killing gaze" of all cockatrices, he never uses it. Not intentionally, anyway. Accidents do happen, and I'm just waiting for him to get all angsty about it and blind himself
Personality: Hah, unlike most of my other male anthropomorphic characters, Exalius is very laid back, good-natured, and intelligent. There is something a little bit menacing about him, however, and it's for good reason. While Vodoun is much more benevolent than it's often portrayed in the mainstream culture, Exalius can and will embrace the darker, malicious side of it as well. Despite his amiability, he's a little bit corrupt in this respect, as well. However, he's much more likely to sit and have a nice cup of tea with you than work in curses and hexes. At least, not without the proper monetary incentive...

^^ Wow, I think this is the best character I have seen on DeviantArt so far. I mean it's not a wolf, dragon or lion. I am highly impressed. ^^

ehehe well I won't Β΄direktly argue...but he's definently a cockatrice...a basilisk has 8 legs by legend, and is covered with skales. Some people say, that the "comb" of the basilisk looked more like a crown, and so it has been portrayed like this a lot.

just my 5 cents.

And anyway, I think its a really creative idea of an antro

Basilisk and cockatrice are more or less synonymous. Various authors, illustrators, and role playing games may all have different versions, but historically the creatures blend together as one. "Eight legs by legend" is not a constant, it's only one of many interpretations (are you thinking of Aldrovandi's woodblock print?)

Incidentally, Pliny the Elder's first record of the basilisk described it as nothing more than a serpent with a bright crown-like spot upon its head.

Again, please don't argue with me. I requested this in the description.

thanks for the information, very informative
Well Im used to the German / Danish interpretation, where they are discribes as two seperate creatures.
Well you can always get smarter at fables I se ^^

I admire the spark of life you put into your works, not just because of what you portray visually, but also in the detail of your character’s biographies you put in your descriptions. I found it very interesting not only that his character is a cockatrice (Which seems very unique) but also in his personality - how he’s good natured and embraces morals for the most part.

More on the actual artwork itself, I like the design and the choice of colors for his character, while his pose and the setup of this sheet are also quite nice for him. Between the description and the words used to describe certain features on/of him (can’t think of the term), I felt you were very informative on Exalius’s character and background.

Neat character, and nicely done on the ref sheet as well.

Awesome, this ref. sheet turned out pretty nice. The Basilisk is one of my favourite mythycal beasts, plus, I just like yard birds, or chickens, in general. I've kinda wondered how a rooster-like anthro would appear if ever drawn, and this version turned out well in my opinion. But, there's something about his feet that seem a little akward. To me, they seem to be a little short and round compared to actual chicken feet, maybe the toes could be a little longer? Hmm, maybe not because maybe lengthening the toes would make him look like he has clown feet. Anyways, the design rawks, and the wings are hecka awesome.

aureath In reply to NeverNegative [2007-01-02 19:04:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there's something a little goofy going on with his feet. I was trying to make them plantigrade instead of digitigrade so he didn't look like a dinosaur or anything. My biggest annoyance that I didn't notice until too late is the fact that his left foot (viewer's right) is thicker than the other, on the bridge. Oh well x_x Too lazy to fix it now.

I've never seen him before. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen any other cockatrice characters! Very cool. You're so good at wings....but then I guess a bat lover would be
You say he doesn't use his lethal glare intentionally; does this mean he has control over it and can turn it off and on (as it were) or is it involuntary and he just has to avoid looking at people?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aureath In reply to SicPuppy [2006-12-31 19:48:28 +0000 UTC]

It's involuntary but the nictitating membrane I mentioned on the sheet (I guess it was a little unclear) negates the effects. So as long as he has that drawn over the eyeball, everything's cool.
