Description This is an illustration I for a children's book, which is probably quite obvious from the excessive sweetness of the whole thing. If I remember correctly, I also was working on some monsters with their guts out for another project on the same day I finished this. I also sometimes inadvertently make the characters in these children's book illustrations look evil and don't notice before having that pointed out to me. I wonder if these two things have anything to do with each other?

Here is another illustration I did for this project:

It's just lovely! But also kind of...uneasy? Which makes it even more interesting
I was lucky to check your page when you faved my work. So thanks for that and I repay the same ^^

Thanks.

I don't know if I would call it uneasy, but it's a matter of opinion after all. On the other hand I work quite a lot on horror themed stuff and in comparison this to me seems completely sweet and copacetic so maybe you are coming at it from a different perspective.

Oh, I'm not sure if I can explain in English how do I exactly feel about it. Why do I find it a bit uneasy? It's so organic, I mean lines and blurs; there are so many sinuous, twisted lines. Everything vibrates, my eyes don't know where to focus, they follow these lines constantly. It reminds me a bit of these Giuseppe Arcimboldo paintings, f.e. one where face is made of plants - I subconsciously search for faces and human shapes in these serpentine lines.
But don't get me wrong - I really love that! For me it makes this work so interesting. It makes me feel real emotions.  And you are absolutely right, rationally I wouldn't also call it uneasy - but somehow this affects some deep emotions of mine. And it's great, I haven't spend so much time looking on a work for a long time

Well I'm glad to hear it that you got some emotional impact from it. It's an illustration for a book meant mostly to look pretty so that's a bit unexpected

Awesome, what's your technique? Do you use any special brushes/software/tools or just hand paint each swirl?

AugustinasRaginskis In reply to Aerial1 [2016-06-29 14:55:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I use Corel Painter for most of my work, but the brushes I used here are pretty basic and no cheats or fancy filters were used. As you say, I painted each swirl by hand. Took me around three days to make this if I remember correctly.

Very nice work. Love the colors and the swirly feel.
This is a beautiful piece. You have such a splendid command of color.

Thanks. I actually struggled a fair bit with color in this before achieving a result I deemed "pretty good". Greens are probably hardest to deal with, at least in my opinion.

I agree. They can be problematic and not always look good next to each other.
Especially going from yellow greens to blue greens. I have a tendency to lean more to the yellow greens.
But you did it well. Looks great mixing with the blue sky and golden clouds.

Have you used PS? You said elsewhere that you use Painter. I was just curious if you had used both and what you felt was better with Painter.
I've always meant to try Painter.

Thanks. Yes, I used Painter for this as well. I used to work in PS, but when I tried Painter and never looked back, it just works so much better for actual drawing and painting. PS is really good for photo editing, but it's not exactly ideal for painting. Painter has more and better brushes in my opinion, it reacts and allows better adjustment of pressure sensitivity, which is very useful. When I sketch I don't even change brush size, I just take a large brush with size variability turned to max and I can draw all needed thicknesses with the same brush. I know it's possible to do in PS, but it started looking very clunky in comparison. Painter also allows stuff like mimicking water color, realistic color mixing, even paper textures even though I use only some of those functions. It also has a very simple and basic feature that Photoshop never had, at least last time I checked and I don't get why - the god damn color wheel which is pretty much an essential feature to choose colors( color pallets suck. I like having access to all possible colors in the same small menu, thank you very much).

Well, that is a glowing recommendation if I've ever heard one.
I will have to check it out soon. I have been having a number of issues with PS that annoy me.
Problems that don't occur in other programs - conflicts between wacom drivers and PS I believe.

thanks for the feedback on that.

Sorry for sounding like an add. Painter has some issues for sure, it can't handle as many layers as PS for exmple, but overall it's better suited for what I do.

No worries - you didn't sound like an Ad, but if someone who uses a program like sit a lot and will give praise for how well it works, that is a pretty good endorsement to try it out, I think.

You're right. I found out about this program, because a comic book artist I like was using it.

Awesome!
A "childrensbook" with blood and gore! Why... thats a super cool idea!! ( evil laughter is heard in every toddlers bedroom) lol

AugustinasRaginskis In reply to KenLit [2016-06-29 14:59:14 +0000 UTC]

I would like to work on a project like that, though the problem is there isn't much of a demand for such a book. I doubt many parents would buy a book filled with gore for their five year olds. I mean I would if I was a parent, but I'm the weirdo in this situation.

Yep, guess you´re right, tbh.
But with a good solid and explainatory story, anything should be possible

This is really cool! Were you hired to illustrate the children's book?

AugustinasRaginskis In reply to Issac-Marine [2016-06-28 18:10:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yes I was, though it's a very on and of project due to various issues from the clients side, so only 4 illustrations out of around 20 are complete and who knows if the rest will ever be.

Ah I see, sometimes in the design shop we'd deal with customers like that on a job, and the job would end up taking 4 times longer than it needed to.

But you've done a beautiful job!

AugustinasRaginskis In reply to Issac-Marine [2016-06-28 18:38:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. At least the client for this project always payed on time and was honest. I encountered people who seam super professional and when the time for paying comes, then the problems start to arise. Those are the worst in my opinion.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Issac-Marine In reply to AugustinasRaginskis [2016-06-28 18:44:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Exactly, I had to drop a job because of a problem like that. It was a hassle, I had to keep telling the client she needed to pay 15$ per page, based on how long it would take me and she wanted to pay 5$
