Description Scientific name: Baryonyx walkeri
Diet: fish, dinosaurs (at the Zoo they eat salmon and bass)
Projected natural lifespan: 23 years
Length: 7.5 meters (~25 feet)
Weight: 1.2 tonnes (~1.32 tons)
Locality: Isle of Wight, England (Wessex Formation), 130 Ma (Early Cretaceous Hauterivian)
Exhibit: Semi-Aquatic Pool

About:
Baryonyx was a rather unusual dinosaur. It was a crocodile-like fish eater that resembled a giant, scaly heron with an alligator head. Fish would be caught by the large claws on this dinosaur's thumbs.

Description and behavior:
As a spinosaur, Baryonyx was a semi-aquatic fish eating dinosaur. They would often sit and wait in one place in the swampy waters of their home, with only their backs seen above the water (if the swamp is deep enough, only the eyes and nostrils would be seen above the water). When a fish or any odd animal is detected by the sensory pits in its crocodile-like snout, the dinosaur would lunge at it with great speed. In shallower waters, Baryonyx would lean their heads forwards and hold their hands in a grasping position. The shade created by their heads and necks attracts fishes that would immediately be grabbed by the waiting claws. These show just how well Baryonyx is adapted to a semiaquatic lifestyle. Some individuals have even been noted to swim and dive after prey, though they are not as competent in these behaviors as the larger Spinosaurus.

At the Zoo:
The Semi-Aquatic pool houses five Baryonyx, two males, Barry and Ryuki, as well a female named Onyx. Barry is a "sit-and-wait" predator, Ryuki is a "shadow-luring" hunter, and Onyx is a diving hunter. There's also two juveniles but their genders could not be determined as of the moment.

The behavior is inspired by crocodiles, herons and marine iguanas.
