Description Another drawing inked during CTCon '08. I got this idea that it would be really neat to put together a painting of the Four Symbols/Constellations of the Chinese sky (maybe even five - more on that in a bit) so I started out with a concept drawing of the Blue Dragon/Seiryuu. (Why am I using the Japanese name for a Chinese constellation? Because people are more likely to recognize it.)

For those unfamiliar with the Chinese version of the skychart, there are four key constellations associated with the colors and cardinal directions (and the fifth, the Yellow Dragon/Huan Long, which represents the Center and has no counterpart in Japanese mythology): The Blue Dragon of the East/Qing Long, White Tiger of the West/Bai Hu, Red Phoenix of the South/Zhu Che, and Black Tortoise of the North/Xuan Wu. They pop up in anime all the time under their Japanese names, which are much more familiar to the average otaku: Seiryuu, Byakko, Suzaku, and Genbu, respectively.

So the idea would be to draw a concept for each of the critters like this drawing and transfer them all to one big piece of watercolor paper and go nuts painting them all together-like. 'Course, that's not likely to happen anytime soon, but it's a neat thought to look forward to (maybe winter break? XD College is starting soon and art classes are going to keep me occupied as heck for the semester).

In the meantime, enjoy this.

Prints, of course, are available - feel free to send a note my way for more info if you're interested.

Nifty inking.
The detail in the bits of fur is especially nice.

Thank you! XD It's nice to have the painstaking detail of inking those little details noticed (really, I think more time went into the fur than the rest of the dragon put together...)

Details like that take time, but they always make things a bit more interesting.
I always feel like they pay off in the end.

I agree that in terms of art and time, the details definitely pay off. The cramps in one's hand muscles, on the other hand... well maybe not. Heh, it could be worse, though!
