Composition wise, it's wonderful. The colours seem a bit flat though for me, which detracts from the quality of the image. Have you considered getting a circular polariser for your lens? I think one might have helped with the colours in this one, making them more intense, and giving this piece a real zing.

Thanks Geoff. I have a polariser, what's the difference between a regular one and a circular one - or are they the same?

I reduced the saturation and contrast slightly in this... what I was aiming for was more the way I saw it - it seemed flat and unreal, more like a painting than real life. There was also a lot less differentiation in the shades of blue than what the photo gave me. So rather than 'zinging it up', I toned it down. So I guess your comment is a very accurate observation of my intentions!

Is there a different sort of polariser other than the circular type? I don't know. I know I have a circular one, which has two parts - one that is fixed to the lens itself, and the other part which I can rotate to get the best lighting.

I guess that if you were trying to achieve the muted look, then you definitely succeeded My opinion is just that - an opinion. I have a distinct bias towards brightly coloured, more vibrant pieces, which is where my comment came from I'll often not show a picture which I think is too flat in terms of colours and tones

Oh well in that case, I have a circular polariser and I was using it.

I think I tend towards bright, intense colour too, as you would probably notice from the earliest few pages of my gallery. BUT, I am trying really hard to experiment and push my comfort zone.

sorry, I still wanted to add some critics, I'll always try to do that if it's encouraged...
I think the boat could be better positioned in the shot, the movement in the shot is to the left so I would like if the boat was more to the right. But then the cloud would look displaced also. It would probably mean waiting very long to get them positioned as I'd like to have them. At the same time the picture would get much more dull I think (if boat and cloud re-positioned), now it has something that makes it a bit more interesting...

I hope you understood what I tried to explain and remeber that these are just my humble opinions...
and I also like the picture very much as it is

I didn't seem to get this comment earlier... weird. I really appreciate your critique. It's funny, I took about a dozen shots of this, all with slightly different compositions... that little cloud disappeared within about 20 seconds of me noticing it, and the yacht was moving very fast... so even though I agree with exactly what you say, I think I did the best I could given the fleeting moment! Thanks again.
