She uses every spare time she can get to squeeze in training with her own given pistols as part of her self defense.

~Personality~

Esther acts quite mature and very independant for her age, doesn't tend to joke around much or act as sarcastic. She has been taught to be a responsible and good daughter ever since at a young age through and through. However Esther has an intelligent mind, she loved to learn and take in knowledge as well as discover. As a child she was curious and eager, but to the point that other children and other parents had looked down upon that, in fear that with the attitude and mentality she has, she might find herself learning about things that don't concern her or should not be in her knowledge. These are such as life outside the walls, or maybe trying to even find the existence and learn about the Titans. Other people's attempt to pressure her failed, as when she grew older, she did just that and took herself up to read a lot, even to go far as to not being able to help herself to take books that hold risky information that others did not want people to know, ones that might cause her trouble. She has now toned this down as she grew... but this doesn't stop her from wanting to uncover the truth in many things.

~Background History

Esther is a bright young girl for her age, born within the Wall Rose. When she was a child , she had a fascination to want to learn, her goal was to find out one day, what was beyond the walls and the whole sole existence for the Titans. She one day hoped that with her knowledge and intellect, she can open up the mystery and origins of the Titans, so that she could be a person that assisted in the mission to find peace once again in the world.

However because of the way she thinks and her goals, this did cause adults and children who meet her to think of as strange or to look down upon her, making it ever since hard to form friends because of different beliefs. A few adults had even thought that she would be a heretic if her attitude was to continue. This got to the point that a couple decided to take matter into their own hands, by visiting Esther's father to talk and discuss about how his daughter behaved with other children. They told Anton to ' control ' his daughter and to keep a very close eye with her behavior. Even if Anton's wife Alva blindly agreed to do something about it, Anton was indignant and gave the couple his honest opinion. To him, there was absolutely nothing wrong with his young daughter and that he is very proud of her. He told them that he has faith in Esther, saying that one day with her intellect and knowledge, she could even be one of the people that would contribute to bring humanity one step closer to what it wanted, the defeat of the Titans and peace. He told them off that if Esther had come to him that anyone of them are still referring her to a Heretic, he would visit them to have a serious talk. After that, the couple haven't interacted with the Brandt family ever since.

Over the years as Esther grew to 16 years of age, she had created several notebooks of possible theories, ideas and research of anything that she thought was important and key which she started when she 13 years old. By this point, her goal was to contribute as much as she could to find out more knowledge, but she was still missing something. She wanted to be a part of it instead of just staying hidden in the sidelines. Her theories and ideas couldn't be shared at this point, so she was stuck at how she was going to reach her goal.

One day when Anton was having a conversation with his wife, Esther had accidentally overheard the conversation. She heard her father mention someone named Keith Shadis, who from the last he heard had been training cadets in the military survey corps. Anton was once close friends with Keith in their youth, but their friendship had drifted apart over the years due to the way Keith had treated him. Esther then had a realization that if she had got in contact with this Keith, she would be sure that she could help and serve the military in some way. It was her step closer to being a part in the mission to save humanity.

In an instant decision, Esther then went over and questioned her father about this Keith Shadis and how she can find him. After explaining her reason to her father, Anton was shocked and decided against it at first of her thoughts to join the military. He told her that it was too dangerous and the missions that soldiers do there are extremely risky and can take her life. Even when Esther told her parents that she was not going to be a soldier, only an assistant to Shadis and any other soldiers of the Survey Corps, her father was still trying to persuade her not to. She pleaded to him, saying that " we need all we can get to bring us a step closer, closer to defeat of the titans... for peace, freedom and saving mankind... so I am going to give my service to the soldiers...". This then got Anton remembering that speech he told the couple when Esther was a child, how he believed that her knowledge and intellect will take her far and she would even be able to help humanity. It took careful thinking and decisions for Anton and Alva to finally agree to let Esther join the military.

It was a few days later that Esther had packed her things just in case, and said her farewells to her parents before leaving, promising that she will write to them when given the chance. Before finally leaving, Anton had told Esther that if she ever crosses paths with Keith, to tell him that he " regretted for not being a good enough friend to him at the end ".

When Esther later arrived at the Survey Corps, she had told a few soldiers that she was looking for someone by the name of Keith Shadis. a small few of these soldiers had laughed at her and wondered what her connection to the military instructor was. When she had gotten annoyed and demanded to see Shadis, the soldiers had gotten suspicious and attempted to get her out. She was suddenly saved by a middle aged man with an intimidating appearance, who had told the soldiers off for misbehaving. The man then firmly told her that she needed to discuss things with him and asked Esther to follow him to somewhere they could have a conversation. The man was indeed still suspicious with this stranger who showed up at the survey corps, but was needed to find out more about her. The man introduced himself to be Keith Shadis before demanding for her name and origin, which she followed. Esther finally found the person that she was looking for. She had told him that she is the daughter of a man that he used to be close friends with in their youth, Anton Brandt, but never knew the reason why the friendship between him and her father faded.

The instructor himself told her that right now, it wasn't the time for her to know about the past just yet, which Esther politely had to agree despite wanting to know. After demanding to know what she was here for, she told Shadis that she wanted to join the military, in the Survey Corps. He asks her if she was sure of her decision, which she replied yes. Keith noticed the hesitance and uncertainty in her tone of voice, which he then demanded her what she REALLY was here for. Esther then explained to him, even going to the point in pouring out her feelings, her goal to learn about the existence of the Titans, but at the same time to use her knowledge to defeat the Titans so that humanity may venture out from the walls once again, for peace and freedom. At the same time, Keith was observing her and was able to discern her traits. This time, he was actually surprised because a part of her attitude and way of thinking reminded him of when he was still in his youth. She thought of herself as different and always had a fascination for the world outside the walls and wanting to find out what was out there. It was at that moment that he told her that he did not want her to join the Survey Corps, or any of the other two military groups as he told her that he could finally see the potential she has without needing to have much physical strength. He then mentioned however that he may have a position for her that would prove useful Shocked at this, Esther told him that she still wanted to be a part of the military, but was confused how if she was advised not to join any of the groups. He then told her that he was giving her the position of his assistant, as well as helper to other higher ups in the rank who need it. He warned her that there would be work involved that required her to be even more attentive, as well as for her to learn some form of combat. Esther instantly agreed to this, as she knew what she was getting herself into.

By then, Esther had already been assigned her position a week before Keith had took on training the new Cadets at the time, which included Eren, Mikasa, Armin and some of the other characters. During the time period before then, Keith had put her in training sessions, supervised by another soldier.

The Soldier was a very skilled fighter and asked her a questions about what she was good at, her stregnths and weaknesses. The soldier then gave Esther a few tests and tasks to complete as the soldier herself silently watched her actions. She picked up that Esther was able to skim over things quickly once but she was able to remember , as well as having quite an accurate eye and able to calculate things at an exact point. The soldier deduced a possible area that Esther would excel at in combat, without physical force or the use of the maneauver gear. She then gave Esther a large wooden case, which revealed to store two identical flintlocke pistols.

The female soldier took her to a training area, which she told Esther to shoot one of the targets. Esther shot at her first target, but because she hadn't never held a gun, let alone two guns in her life, she hesitated and her shot missed then bullseye ( And shot the foot fin the dummy ) the soldier told her to not be afraid to doubt her skills, for She already possessed such accuracy and perception, that she guaranteed Esther would have an advantage. Listening to the soldier, Esther put her mind into work and shot, this time hitting just two inches away from the target. This was a big improvement for her, and all the soldier said was to practice as much as she could in her spare time. However during this time, Esther would just serve as a backgrounds character and wouldn't interact with the other main characters yet.

After that, Esther had been going on with her job, slowly getting used to it. The more she trained, the more she found it easier to shoot targets right in the bullseye. She also practiced using both pistols, spinning and turning quick enough to shoot both targets at the same time. However she had problems with taking out her gun, as she wasn't quick enough. She needed to spin the pistols a bit in her hand before shootings to make it easier, but she struggled at that. While she wasn't training though, she didn't realize that she was being watched from afar by a small group of soldiers from the 104th division who seemed to have been admiring her pinpoint accuracy and speed with the guns.

When Esther took a break to reload, she was approached by one of the soldiers, a short haired blond boy her age with blue eyes. He seemed a slightly hesitant at first, but then was able to give her a little advice. He told her that he had observed her earlier, and that her fingers were on an angle in the wrong way, making her fingers seemed jumbled together whenever she pulled out her gun. When she asked him to show her, he went over and held a hand over her's to position the weapon in the right way, guiding her through. Once she got the positioning down, she tried it all again. Laying her fingers in the right position, to Her surprise she was able to take out the weapon and spin it with such speed, feeling the movements flow so easily all of a sudden. When she shot right into the bullseye she was shocked and amazed at how the piece of advice did actually worked. She turned to the young man and asked who he was, which he told her his name was Armin Arlert. She thanked him genuinely for figuring out the solution to her problem which she was able to overcome. On that very day, Esther held deep respect and admiration for the soldier.

It was until later on that Esther starts to interact with the other soldiers of the 104th division during her job, forming friendships along the way and got to know the little more. Her close and first friend was with Armin, as both shared many similarities. they both shared the same amount of intellect and logical thinking, although Esther believes that Armin is way more of a genius and strong fighter than her, which she also respects his high intelligence. She even Says it herself that that he is the most analytical person at her age she has ever met.

~Trivia~

- it is sort of a running gag that Esther is not afraid of Keith and doesn't think of him as intimidating at all. She has actually gotten used to the instructor''s antics that she just talks to him and acts normally how she is. Students are just Baffelled because while he is yelling, scaring and going up the faces of other students, she just acts casual as if this was a daily normal occurrence for her. She honestly thinks that Keith means well.

- the romantic feelings and crush for Armin didn't start straight away, as it started to slowly develop much later on. The two were just seen as good friends.

- she admires Mikasa quite a lot too and admits she has never seen anyone with a drive and fiery determination as much as Eren's

- she was also good friends with Hannah and Franz and thought their love for each other was adorable. She was extremely sad when she heard Franz was killed.
