Description This is a 18" necklace that was completely built by hand. I cut, shaped and polished the glass cabs that protect the butterfly wings. I also cut, filed, and sanded each "dish" to hold the wing from silver. Finally, I soldered each jump ring to securely hold all the links together.

No butterflies were harmed in the making. Wings were bought from a butterfly farm and they lived a natural life.

This was my practice pendant before investing hours of work in this final product. Here is my DA i.d. of me wearing the necklace

Thank you I'm glad you see it as special, because that's how I see this piece too. Something magical with a little bit of everything (speaking about colors and patterns)

Ha, ha... my glasses are "baby phat".

Thanks! It was a challenge... so many different materials involved. Glad to be done and looking forward to trying something similar again so I can build my technique/quality.

What a lovely idea. Soldering the links afterwards without damaging the wings and glass must have been tricky. Great stuff!

It was a lot trickier than I orginaly thought, but I learned a lot from it. Thanks

It's so beautiful, but the wings kinda creep me out even though I know they weren't hurt. It's like those old scarab pins, I adore them but can't bring myself to touch them!

Artsee1 In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-03-31 04:14:43 +0000 UTC]

I think the "creep" factor is part of what intrigues me... but honestly, I had to wear glove when handling the wings.

Since they're teeny tiny scales that could rub off that is probably wise anyway
