Description Recent (and continuing) storms have brought huge waves, high winds and torrential rain... Not easy to navigate in a sandy river estuary joining the Atlantic Ocean. Sorry for the quality - this weather is not good for carrying a DSLR
The "fort" on the right comes from the Napoleonic Era and was also aΒ (very cold and damp) prison for political prisoners. It also has a lighthouse to mark the navigable channel... Clearly the Captain missed it this time

You are very welcome dear Ans - it took them almost 2 weeks to bring a salvage vessel up from Spain and then have a weather window (between the storms and rough seas) to be able to remove the ship from the sand bank... it had a lot of water in the hull and was listing to one side...

Oh I betcha! That prison was "very cold and damp".Β  Makes me shiver just looking at it!Β Β  Great capture! And the "quality" somehow adds 'impact' to this shot, Mel.

Damp is an understatement - flooded maybe a more realistic description... many died there in great pain and distress
Thank for your comments about the quality - under the conditions (taking the shot) it was the best I could do..

I suspect that the storm this weekend has also pushed it even further onto the sand bank... So will need a couple of salvage tugs to get her off

Thank you Hal
You are quite right - a lot of power in water (1 tonne per m3) and the waves hitting the shores are Atlantic storm waves - nothing to reduce their force until they hit the shore...

Thanks very much Denyse - The seas have been MUCH more turbulent of recent and will be again within the next 6 to 10 hours - so many areas are closed off by the police as the risk to life is too great...
