Yeah, the Sand Raiders characters were obviously based on the original "Mad Max/Road Warrior" universe and the many shifty characters that populated Tatooine in the "Star Wars" Universe. I always found them to be a fun addition to the BMFM series.

It's okay- we're all lost to some degree since the full series is so hard to come by I haven't seen the entire series in it's original English in almost 20 years XD
I have the entire French DVD set, but all the foreign dubs suuuuuuucccccccckkkkkkkk. Nothing beats the originals- and I don't know how the international viewers even get half the jokes that are made at the expense of the original English voice cast- which was made up almost entirely of the 'Beverly Hills:90210' cast. Even some of Brie's face masks are of Luke Perry and Ian Ziering. And one of the funniest lines is when Vinnie says about Brie, "I SWEAR I know this guy from somewhere", and Brie responds, "Maybe we went to High School together."

I have the horribly edited Criterion Season 1 DVD in English, and then I have all 3 seasons on DVD in French. I bought the French DVDs originally because the French website I bought them from said they were dual-language.
THE CAKE WAS A LIE.

Ah, good. When I heard "Grave" and "Raid" I thought grave robber first, oh prejudice. Lucky she has all that fur because the desert would sunburn her so bad if she truly didn't wear so much.
I'm the opposite, dynamic poses are usually my strong point and I got to force myself to full poses. I always think my work comes out too flat though. :/

Artaith-21 In reply to FlyingRam [2013-12-13 21:56:43 +0000 UTC]
Ha ha no. I had known for some time while developing her that 'Grave' was going to be part of her name. For awhile there I kept coming back to 'GravenImage' and I couldn't figure out why- was sure I had gleaned it from somewhere but couldn't recall where and was worried about being original. Took me forever but going through my MP3 list one day I suddenly remembered it was a song title. Mulled it over a little more with several other ideas piggybacking on 'Grave' before settling on Gravekeep and tying it in with her background.
Luckily it's the Martian desert, so the sun is a bit farther away than we're used to XD. But the constant sandstorms that occur on Mars can't be too much fun.
My strong points have always been expression and gesture ( the latter probably not as obvious in my 'toony' stuff as it is in my life drawing portfolio, which is really strong ) and I'm really trying to focus on my weaker points that I'm aware of. Even when I was picked up as the penciler for that short 6 issue comic series from Dark Horse, they noted my lack of foreshortening/angled shots in my work. I still got the work, but that has always stuck in my head as something I need to force myself to work on- I just tend to be a 'perfectionist' when it comes to proportions, and because of that, my art brain does not like drawing forced perspective on figures ( ie. big head and shoulders with little, vanishing trunk/legs for a downshot ). When I try to draw foreshortening and forced perspective, I worry about it looking right so much that I make it harder than it actually is.
I would say your work is very dynamic. If you want to deal with the flatness, I would say try completing some as grayscale paintings. That can really add a lot. And it's hard to get accurate depth and value when you're worried about colors- so choose a piece and paint it strictly greyscale. You can always return and put in color overlays later.

I'm really glad you like the color scheme, because I feel color harmony and color theory are a couple of the areas I need to improve on, and I've been trying to figure out ways to do that. So I'm glad you think it all goes together well ^^
Oh, there will plenty more to come whenever I can cram some art time into my busy schedule- especially VinniexCharley because I can't get enough of them XD. I have a cute Christmas one I hope to finish in time!

I love designing and writing up backstories for OCs ^_^ Big part of the fun of being so enamored of a particular franchise ^_^
And given the fact she's known to shamelessly run around topless quite often, she probably isn't too worried about the straps, lol.

Turned out great! The upshot angle and her pose totally bring out her fierce, untamed nature. Though you can't see what she is looking at, her pose and the spark in her eyes seem to say 'Bring it on'.
She sure is an opponent that souldn't be underrated, neither in battle nor in terms of making cunning plans.
(btw. I love her hair! the colour as well as the structure. It looks as untameable as she is herself!)

Artaith-21 In reply to SwanjaThorgunsdottir [2013-12-09 07:48:58 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! 'Bring it on' was definitely the attitude I was trying to portray in this picture. I have several scribbles of her floating about in my sketchbook that I may just upload all into one big sketchdump- but pretty much in the majority of them she has that same-type of expression- with the exception of one that shows her in one of her moments of dogged psychotic determination, lol. She just gets that wild look in her eyes when running down her prey.
She actually has been a lot of fun to write in my fanfics. She's the type of villain that provides a lot of interaction and liveliness to each scenario she is tangled up in with our protagonists.
And thanks for the comment on the hair! I really tried to make it look textured and I hope I was able to keep the obvious stark orange color that seemed to recede a bit with the more depth and value I built up underneath it; but I was determined to really attempt to find ways to push shading and values in my digital art. Often times she has her hair partially ratted into dreads and often wears a couple of long braided sections towards the front. But yeah- definitely a reflection on her being 'untameable'. It has been a lot of fun to design her.

Thanks. I believe we've touched on before about how I feel eyes are one of the most important things to consider when designing characters ( I believe it was in one of our Throttle conversations, lol ) so I definitely always try to keep that in mind when drawing and designing characters.
The only place I've ever kept any of my fanfictions is on my own website, and I currently have those pulled down at the moment. I'm currently in the process of reposting one of my most well-known RR related ones to DA ( I think I already posted 1-2 chapters over in that section ) and will probably post more in the near future.
But I'm trying to work a little bit on them every week or so. With imminent freedom from this horrible job on the horizon, hopefully more time for personal creativity will come with it!
The problem is, most of my original RR and BMFM fanfics were all hand-written on notebook paper when I was in junior high and highschool in my study hall period between the years of 1995-1998, lol, and it has been taking years of finding those old notebooks and scribing them into digital format. Others were typed on an old MS DOS platform and printed up, never saved to floppy or anything, and all I have is a single hard copy of quickly fading, dot matrix ink. And of course, along the way, I'm doing a ton of editing and rewrites to them, since I was essentially a teenager when writing those and a lot of parts when I read them now I'm wanting to facepalm myself, lol.

My old best girlfriend in high school was the same way- she drew eyes with accompanying eyebrows all over everything, lol. I tend to do it all day long at work, as well, on my report ledgers, pffft.
Yes, rewriting them can be a chore, but when I have ample time, it can be fun. I am taking some vacation time in February ( only a week, boooo ) and I'm hoping to get some creative stuff like art and writing and etc. done in that time that I've been wanting to focus on.

Biker mice is one show I don't think I've watched much growing up ( makes a mental note to look up the shows on Google and watch* As or the image I really like the pose. Poses for me has always been a problem not only due to perspective but the body structure as well. One has to know how a joint properly moves and bends and how it would range.. God I sucked at that, it was the reason why I always used the same standing pose to draw with back in the 90's x3!

Oh yeah, anatomy is definitely really difficult when trying to do artwork. Life drawing classes have really helped in the past; but right now I'm actively trying to greatly improve my anatomy skills so that I can draw the body in just about any position or movement. I have found a lot of books on anatomy including one that details how muscle tissue connects to the skeletal structure extremely helpful. When all else fails, there is always posing in the mirror and snapping self-photos with my cell phone to use as reference shots for things like foreshortening and etc. XD

For the most part I taught myself that sorta stuff, I used online guides and observations on now to draw ..figuratively speaking * tadum tish* But yeah a lot of the old art you used to see of me before I allowed myself to let go was done myself from my own methods of practice. A part of me really would like to attempt to draw furry art again, I had gotten many complements from our fellow rovers over it. I guess I was my own worst critique in the end. I may look up on drawing again and give it a shot, who knows I may just get better then I was in the 90's

I think we all tend to be our worst critics- I tend to do the same thing to myself- and will nitpick the smallest things to death in my art and spam my friends to death with the same pic over and over again for feedback/crit until they're like 'holy crap woman, I said it looked fine!', lol.
You should get back into drawing again. Drawing doesn't always have to be a serious pursuit. Sometimes it's just something to do to unwind or deal with life's stresses or cope with situations and emotions, etc. etc. ^^
