I would love to learn the story behind those two.
I think that Nick was like one of a important member of the gang, while Francis a henchman. I'm pretty sure once they got pursued by cops, and both betrayed the other to save one's bacon... And both failed and got captured.

Actually, if you play The Passing. There is a chance of a dialouge between Nick and Francis. Francis will go: "Never thought a fancy ass like you would have made it this far." where as Nick responds with: "That's funny, because I knew your lazy ass would still be here"
