I was finally happy when I realised that I had won bronze medal in women's 50m butterfly event at Manchester para swimming championship. I think it was the first time I was happy since my accident. But that happiness did not last longer.
I was really happy when they called out my name. I stepped on the podium. A lady came and put a bronze medal on me. The bad part started after that when she tried to hand me the mascot. I did not see that coming. I was puzzled like how should I hold it. Should I hold it with my legs? But my shoes were on so that was not the option. So I had no other option than trying to hold it between my stump and body. Basically in my armpit. But it slipped. I tried to hold it by using me thigh but it fell. That is when I realised that I am just a helpless armless disabled girl. It was so embarassing. I didn't know how to pick it.
A volunteer standing near by saw that and picked it up for me. But again, he was also confused how to hand the mascot to me. I extended my stump and he tried to put the mascot between my stump and body but it was slipping. At this point I lost it. I wasn't happy. I told him to keep the mascot on the aside on the floor and he can pick it up for me again when I leave. Other winners were handed their medals. Photos were clicked. When it was time to leave he picked it up for me. This time I tried to hold it between my sholder and neck. Lifted my right shoulder a little and bent my neck little towards right and held the mascot. Luckily this time it was not slipping.
