Description The Southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) is a type of medium sized ratite native to Australia, New Guinea and the surrounding islands. They are the largest of the three extant cassowary species and also the species with the biggest head crest. In cassowaries it’s the male that incubates the eggs and takes care of the chicks, while the female leaves and goes its own way. This is what I decided to depict here, a male cassowary with one chick. Cassowaries are powerful birds, easily capable of fatally injuring dogs and humans if they feel threatened. They do so by jumping and performing kicks with their feet.
