Description The scenario imagines the Greeks settling a lot more colonies on the banks of the Sea of Azov then they did in reality, enough that the population crystallizes into a nation. I understand parts of the area are quite fertile, enough to sustain a large population. Then it goes through what is a typical history for Eastern Europe - at times an independent nation, at times split up, and at other times part of an empire (Roman, Mongol, Ottoman, Soviet).

Placing the country on the migratory steppe peoples' motorway is convenient because it gives me a clean slate. Any real life element that's awkward for the story can just be eliminated ('[kingdom] was destroyed by the Mongols').

I must admit, I'm not personally familiar with the area or its history and I've only done some limited research, made doubly difficult by the fact that I don't speak Russian. I may have got some things quite wrong. For example, I have no idea if a canal between the Volga and the Don could have been possible in a preindustrial era.

I'm also not a linguist and I don't speak Greek. I hope all the names I made up, as well as the way the toponyms change over time, make sense for a language derived from Greek. This can't possibly be quantified but, just to get an idea of it, imagine Tanisian like 50% Greek, 20% local (Alan/Ossetian), 20% Romance, and 10% Slavic.
