They are genetic experiments of the cosmic entities known as the Celestials. They have an enemy race, the Deviants, also resultant of the Celestials' experiments. 
They're more like DC's New Gods (Kirby created the Eternals when he returned to Marvel, after he created the New Gods for DC).
The Eternals aren't well known, the most prominent was Sersi, who was an Avenger. Some of them were named after Greek/Roman mythological characters, like Thena (after Athena), Makkari (after Mercury) and Sersi (after Circe).
