Description I finally did a picture of Kat Von D! And I LOVE it. I whipped this out pretty fast because I'm putting it in the MN State Fair. Plus, I like it even more because I haven't done charcoal in a while...

Notes:
*soft charcoal and charcoal pencils
*11x14 in. paper
*15 hours (that's fast!)

Gorgeous picture! I love it! Wish I could do something thid amazing!

Any advice for someone with a serious phobia of using charcoal? ^^

Thanks so much!

My suggestions:
*wash hands often
*blow charcoal dust AWAY from blank areas
*have a sheet of paper to keep your hand clean when working in the middle of a picture
*use a kneaded eraser to keep blank areas nice and clean (do it even if it doesn't look dirty)
*compressed charcoal sticks are good for big areas, but for small stuff, use a soft charcoal pencil and keep it sharp!
*for blending I use make-up q-tips which have a pointed end and work great for detail
*always spray the finished drawing with a matte fixative or put into a frame so it won't get ruined

Lots of tips, but they're ones everyone should know.

Thanks a lot for your advice! That's really helpful

I've recently started using Q-Tips for pencil shading so i'll definently try that with the charcoal too! ^^

Thanks again for all your help

Hi and hey. I'm a super duper Kat von D fan. So I thought I'd honor her and those who have made art of her. Therefore, I featured this masterpiece in my journal.
Check it out!

I love Kat Von D and this is really good! Though, I think you could have given her nose a bit more room. Still, there's a lot of nice detail.

I was about to say this looks like someone I've seen on TV until I looked back up to read the title. Wonderful job on the detailing of her tattoos.

Wow, great job, it really looks like Kat. She's such a beautiful subject. I like the shading you got with the charcoal, it's very dark and rich. There's only one thing a little off about this- her lips don't seem to quite match the angle of the rest of her face, and it looks as if her right cheek is slightly malformed. Faces are hard though, and take a lot of practice. Overall, a great job on this.

I know, the lips bother me too. But the right cheek looks distorted in the reference photo as well because of her sunglasses.

Thank you

I love all of the detail, and intricacy to this piece- in the thumb I thought it was a photograph : )

Nice! 15 hours... yeah I would have guessed that it would have taken way longer than that.

Thanks Charcoal doesn't seem to take as long as pencil. My longest pencil one took 60 hours total.

Oh, great work! I thought at first that the right side of her face looks a big strange but I guess that's the glasses ^^
Really great detail on the tattoos and shirt
