Description It's done

After nine months of on-again-off-again work, the Castle in mom's room is now finito. And I am too exhausted to feel as excited as I should be

It stands 7'3" tall (a bit over 2 meters), and goes from the floorboard to the ceiling. It all started once upon a time with a picture of the castle, a pencil, and a yard stck, and now look where it has ended up. The model for decoration is the 50th anniversary castle, but if you go to my Stock site you can see that some things are very different (though some are as close as I could make them to the original). You can take a look at it here: [link]

Ok, lets talk materials. The background light blue-grey, the blue of the turrets, all the greys of the bricks (and there's six colors of brick), the black, the silver, pearl and the gold are all wall-paints, semi-gloss. The gold, pearl, and silver are actually gold and silver leaf. Very runny. I did not like them; they kept dripping. Next time I will use all metallic tempura paints. The bronze and copper as well as the blue and silver glitter paint are all tempura. Since tempura is water washable we will have to "fix" the mural with polyurethane. That will be done when the weather gets warmer and we can open all the windows. I used a number of different sized brushes, as well as my fingers and nails to egde.

The castle still needs some cleaning up: pencil marks and such, as well as the wall itself around the castle now needs a touch up coat of paint.

The swagging is covered in little flower designs, because the actual swagging is floral carving in high relief. So I tried to be as close as I could to the idea of it. All the swagging is bronze with gold highlights. THey are covered in hidden Mickeys, by the way.

It is four in the morning, and I must leave for Columbus in a few hours, so I don't have the opportunity to get a picture in daylight. When I get back in a few weeks I will retake the pictures using sunlight and replace the image.

A giant version is here: [link] (pardon the orange hue); if you want to take a closer look at the detail. When I get the chance to get it in sunlight I will also probably take detail pics of the turrets and such, to show off all the little stuff I did.

The mural is now mom's to complete. She will do the landscaping and sky. When that's finished she'll load it into her gallery as a collaboration.

Sort of. Some of the details are directly from the 50th anniversary castle, like the swirls on the turrets. Other things are adaptations, and some things are totally my invention. I did get crazy with the glitter paint!

Thank you so much for your comment!

oooh! I'm lovin' the glitter in the paint. What is this in? Someday I'll do some smallworld stuff like this.

What exactly do you mean "what is it in"? The painting is in my mother's bedroom, if that's what you mean Small World would be so totally cool, espcially with gliiter paint!

The glitter paint is just tempura that has glitter in it. Got it at the craft store for $4 a bottle (and the bottles are pretty big too). I only used about a fourth of the silever, and the castle is covered in silver glitter. It comes in a rainbow of colors as well. I used the silver and the blue. The silver glitter comes in clear tempura, so you can put silver over anything.

When I said "what is it in?" I meant what media was it done in aka tempra, acrylic, oils...ect. Yay for silver!

The glitter is all tempura, as is the bronze and the copper. The yellow is acrylic, and all the rest is actually latex wall paint, believe it or not

Thank you. Yes, I am thankful, but like most artists, I look at it and think how I could have done it differently... and the picture makes it look like it's leaning to the right which it most certainly is not in real life... sigh. But I am happy now that it's done and it looks so pretty and sparkly in mom's room. And she loves it, so that's all that matters.

Yeah!

I am also one who used to live very near Disney and now lives over a thousand miles away. (which is good, I hated the weather in Florida). Now if they will only build a seasonal Disney up here in Ohio (we certainly have the economy for it: Cedar Point, King's Island, Geauga Lake, Hershey Park and Kennywood in Western Pennsylvania, Hollyday World in Indiana, Michigan's Adventure, the parks up in Ontario...) Sigh...

RavenWillowHawk In reply to AreteEirene [2006-04-01 18:42:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm afraid the economy here wouldn't support it. *sigh*

But remember that Orlando was a teeny little town in the middle of swmap land in Florida. (and Anaheim was covered in orange groves). Disney makes their own economy They could at least have a cruise line that would dock in the Vancouver area, and tour further north. Even I might venture on that cruise.

Thank you

I redid the photo, but the colors still aren't quite right. We had to flood the room with incandescent light, which gives it a yellow tint. So correcting for the yellow/orange cast throws off some of the other colors. Meh... I will redo the picture when I get home next, by using sunight
