i think the painting itself is really good but there is a little thingy going on with your references. I think if you study a potrait it is really important to have a reference with strong light and shadow shapes to really show that form. Here everything is a little flat

i donΒ΄t know what program you use for converting the color photo to black and white but photoshop for example offers multiple ways to convert a color photograph to B&W. And every method gets you another result.Β
The best would be creating a Layer filled with Black and set it to color that will convert the picture. If you still end up with a result like this with really subtle value changes then the reference has a really soft ambient light going on instead of a clear one direction light. That hasnΒ΄t to be bad but as is said most of the time it makes a face feel a little flatΒ
