Description I've had this "brilliant" idea for a blog, and this guy is for the first official entry. It's gonna be an online bestiary, so I will have somewhere to yap about nonexistent creatures to my heart's content and pretend I did all that random research for a reason.

This happens to be a hippalectryon, which is a creature found mainly in Greek black-figure pottery. It's a horse crossed with a rooster, a "cock-horse," if you want, because I know we're all mature. (It translates the other way, but...no, not going there.) It's supposed to look awkward, it's not supposed to be elegant like Pegasus. It also has no myth, so it's not very common. Therefore it's a perfect candidate for the Bestiary Project.

I won't bombard people with all the monsters, but I like this one a lot right now.

Beautiful!

And so good to know I'm not the only one trying to get the word out about this awesome, but obscure mythical creature!

Here's MY online page about the Hippalectryon:

Is it just me or does mythology like to crossbreed horses like crazy? X'D

Really like his face!

Yeah, I realized I had about five or six horse-things listed as my first few creatures for this project. Decided to mix it up but I still wanted this silliness first.

lol, I won't force you to go there either! DX

I like the way you drew the horse half, it has such long legs! I bet it can run fast! But the wing looks so small... can they fly?

Yes, somehow. I suspect magic is involved. The wings really are small in the images. [link]
Actually, I'm really not certain it is a flying monster. Half the time horses that are running look like they're leaping through the air. These might be doing the same and nobody realized it.

Hmm. Very interesting indeed.

Small or not, I think you're better at drawing wings than that ancient potter was. XD

Ah, thanks. I have a love/hate thing for wings.

I really like this, Apple. You put a lot of effort into the cross-hatching and realism of the pic, and it shows. Good work!

Now if I can keep up this quality for the rest of the blog, that'll be great.
