Description "Probably no family of carnivores is so poorly known as the viverrids..."
-T.A. Vaughan, Mammalogy

Back to the submitting-these-things groove? Here is the very large and similar looking Team Genet, everyone's favourite slinky little vivs. Which I made different colours to save myself going mad drawing 13 spotty brownish-grey animals

I want a purple one <3

For those tuning in now, this is part of my spur of the moment idea to draw all 34 species of viverrid for my big analysis on TDF.

I actually managed to find a website with pelts for all the different species, since googling any genet gives you mainly pictures of small spots and large spots, but it seems to have died so I can't show my working and you're going to have to take my word for it

FUN THINGS TO KNOW:
-Genets are considered the closest viverrids to the original carnivore form. They're adaptable but less specialised than the more omnivorous civets.

-Aquatic genets are actually pretty crappy swimmers. They hunt by tapping the surface of water to attract fish. It then puts its whiskers in the water to feel when the fish is near.

-It is really hard to find species specific stuff on these boogers...at the moment I'm reading a 108 page paper on large spotted genets that a friend found, trawling it for useful stuff. At the moment it's lots of diagrams of genet movement, so it's pretty adorable People keep genets though, so feel free to chuck any genet information you know at me

I'm gonna have to fave this since my daemon is pretty much figured out to be an aquatic genet.

It's gonna be tough finding references if I ever want to draw him.

I love genets, but I love civets a little more X3
Very nice range of different genet though!
Don't have any more information, though I understand the frustration of trying to look up viverrids, its become quite frustrating on my end for genets relatives, the civets ^-^

Ack, they're so cool I'd probably have one if I could, but I prefer civets personally

people say that genets are very good pets, because they're clean, friendly and insistent. but they have civet smell and that's why not so many people have civets or genet as a pet.

My god! BEAUTIFUL work! (And quite adorable)
I absolutely need to know where you got those Gallifreyan symbols. Or did you make them up?

Three of them are the gold circles in my replica chameleon arch fobwatch (I've been meaning to make the cover design or the whole inside design but haven't had the time (or deathwish ) yet), but the rest are made up...I have them saved as picture files if you want them.

Also, thank you

wow late comment totally but XD I just saw this again the other day when I looked up Genets and decided that my daemon was a genet. idk exactly why, but the moment I saw the one on the Wiki article I was like "mhm."

/RANDOM.

Aphrael7 In reply to Zooky [2010-05-08 09:26:34 +0000 UTC]

Genets are really pretty and popular...they're the pine martens of the viverrid family when it comes to daemianism. I resent this because I'm an awful person

Zooky In reply to Aphrael7 [2010-05-08 15:05:45 +0000 UTC]

Awhh, really? XD; I'd only seen a couple more when I actually searched Genet daemon or something like that.

THANKYOUUU FOR MAKING THIS DD !!! I love it sooo muccchhh. Genets ftw <33333

I can see a Lesedi in there (large-spotted genet). May I ask how you know what the lesser known species look like? There's barely any pictures of them on the internet

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aphrael7 In reply to Servaline [2010-05-08 09:24:41 +0000 UTC]

There was a site with pelts and pictures for all of the genet and linsang species...it's gone down and I'm kicking myself that I didn't save all of the pictures It was here [[link] ]and I check it every once in a while to see if it's back...it went away while I was drawing and then came back, so I hold out a little hope that it'll do it again.

But yaaay, I'm glad you approve. Genets, they are pretty

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Servaline In reply to Aphrael7 [2010-05-10 10:28:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh maan that's fail DD: I wish the site was still up, I'd be going crazy over it

Curious, have you seen the .pdf file on genets? It has some neat photos and diagrams of genets and the like ^_^

How cute!!! Im amazed lol
I dont really know much of Genets yet, since i just discovered my daemon loves to change form into one.
But since i almost look at one 24 hours a day this is pretty good! Love your drawings! Keep up the good work! *faves*

Aphrael7 In reply to Eclaring [2010-05-08 09:28:30 +0000 UTC]

Genets really are massively popular daemon forms (by viverrid standards). It's the pretty slinkiness of them. But thanks, I'm glad you like it

I love them all, but I have never heard of some of them. I'm very interested in this guys, where do you get your information about them? I would love to do a study in Africa or Europe on these genets behavior.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aphrael7 In reply to Genetta3 [2010-05-08 09:33:25 +0000 UTC]

I would love more people to go and do research on them, if only so that I can read it all I pretty much scrounge any book, paper or website which has any information on any viverrids...it's really messy research that I do, just flailing out in every direction

WildSpiritWolf In reply to Aphrael7 [2010-11-03 18:09:49 +0000 UTC]

SO saving this! Can you recommend any good genet/viverrid books? Or do they not exist for the most part?

And on the topic of books, Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia has a decent section on viverrids.

I heart these drawings so much. I could look at your vivs all day. O_O

Aw man, I really ought to pop on the forum and see how everyone's doing (: But I just don't have the heart to say how belly-up my own drawing plans have gone. :/
You just keep getting better though (: Whatever the hell those little glyph marks are or what they're for, I don't know, but I really like them. The subtle little patterns in the shading of each drawing and the different colour schemes are beaut, too. Keep it going! (:
And I'm working on your drawing, I've got an idea in mind, I just don't want to commit it to paper and stuff it up. (:

Ff, sounds like me with this place D: I'm terrible with keeping up. But no one'll give you any trouble for having to put off your forum-y art plans...and if they do I will poke them with my stick.

Ehe, the glyphs are Doctor Who nerdery And thank you, I'm always honoured by compliments from proper talented arty people like you

Flattery will get you everywhere. (; I should be able to get some stuff done over summer, including your own little doodle (still got the idea!), but no way am I going to hit 365 now... I might try and make up to one every week xD

So how are the glyphs Doctorish? I mean, it's one of the only shows I make a point to watch, but I've no idea how they're related? :shot:
