Zuko is Filipino, African, and Korean in origin, one of the origins for the name Sokka is Norse, Hahn is a German and Jewish name, Korra is a greek name, Yakone is an Inuit name, and Tahno? His name has multiple origins - Italian, Spanish, and Japanese. There are more but I think you get the point. I'm not saying that some of these name's aren't Asian, but their origins run far deeper than that.

These are all possiblities within asian/inuit culture (Note Korra is also a village name in China and Hahn phonetically sounds like Han, which is a Korean name) and that almost everything in the show is influenced by asian or inuit culture. I don't doubt that these are possible names in other places (It'd be hard to not have some overlap), but they have a common ground in that they are all related to asia or inuit. That's the structure of the shows cultures. They're all asian/inuit themed. That's like if you had a cast of African characters (like legitimate people who live in Africa in small tribes and what not) and then you have Abena, Ebuntu, Baako and Chuck (and yes all of those, excluding chuck, are african names… or atleast the internet tells me so). One of these things just doesn't belong here. Can YOU point it out? And I can make the case that Abena and Baako are both possibilities (though not likely) within Japanese (あべな＆ばあこ).

I've seen one other character named so haphazardly (something like Carl), but they did at least explain, "I didn't feel like thinking of a name". I had a slightly less problem with that.

So you know what? I'll have my opinion that the name "Leon" is a terrible one for a character within the Avatar universe and is even somewhat disrespectful. and you can go do whatever it is you do. = )

You forget all of the A:TLA Freedom Fighters, including Jet, have pretty western names to me. One of the musicians from "The Cave of Two Lovers" is named Lily. Then, the most outlandish example in the episode Then in the episode "Tales of Ba Sing Se" with The Story of Toph, the leader of the girls that make fun of Toph's makeup is named Star. Just Star. It's the most valley girl name you can think of, and yet they even say her name out loud in the A:TLA universe. So it *can* happen. These are just the ones I can recall from the top of my head.

Indeed, for the freedom fighters they have odd names, but think of them as a Lost Boys kind of thing. They probably had normal names prior to joining. I don't think a parent would ever name their child "The Duke" or "SmellerBee". These are more like Nicknames to go by. To support my case, it's highly unlikely that Longshot would just so happen to be a wonderful archer. He is most likely named for his skill.

The singers. The Hippies. The stereo typical hippie (which they were) also got into the field of picking names for themselves, so lily can be a self imposed name.

Now star is a better example for your case. The only possible way I could explain this is that it'd be a nickname of some form, but I doubt it. I have no explanation for Star as a name.

An even better example that you should have used was Hope. The baby that was born on the Serpents pass. There's no way to dispute that as on screen we see the parents say, "let's name her Hope". Although in the avatar extras her name was originally "Xi Wang" which means hope, but was changed for viewers to understand easier.

Either way, I do not agree with Leon as a name. Respect what Avatar is, a world based off of Asian and Inuit cultures. Asians and inuits especially don't get much in media and entertainment. They are sometimes the Foreign Villain type. They are sometimes the Magical elder. But a world almost devoid of Black or White people and left solely to Asians and Inuits? That's something American media needs. I find it offensive when people impose and try to argue that it's not a world of asians and inuits, but a world with culture based off it. Just let it be what it is. It's like "The Last Airbender". That was one of the most offensive things I've seen in my life and I've seen some pretty racist stuff. So go impose your Leon's and what not on DC comics or Adventure Time or Ben 10 or really any other show. Just let us have this one.

At this point I'm not arguing with you so much as stating my point of view on the topic of Race in media. If you have a world built off of Asians and Inuits, and your a fan enough to make a character for your enjoyment, be respectful to the source media and name it appropriately.

I'm not trying to insult your opinions, so the passive aggressive attitude towards me really isn't necessary. The things you said are somewhat true; I don't recall there being a specific city in China named Korra, but I'll assume you aren't lying to me to help fuel your own opinion. With the name Hahn, although it does sound phonetically similar to Han, you can't say, "oh, it sounds like Han, so that must be why they picked it." I would think the creators of ATLA and LoK would have used that particular name, instead of using a different name of completely different origin. We don't know what they were thinking though, so none of us can say what they did or didn't want to do in choosing a name.

I do agree with you that it can be frustrating when you see a name such as Carl, or Bob being used as an OC name, but it's just that. It's an original character. If you don't like it, don't complain about it. Instead of picking on someone's choice for their OC's name because you think it's a terrible choice, just ignore it. They don't want to hear you whine about how you think it's a stupid name. It's their choice - their opinion of what is a good name for their character.

Don't get your panties in a bunch because I'm stating facts as well as my own opinion, and they clash with your opinion. I didn't comment on your post to argue with you over something this silly. I'm just sharing my opinion, like you have. It wasn't my intention to offend you in any way, but I just wanted to tell you that maybe instead of being so close-minded about it, to realize that they're just OC's. They're just names. It's not like you're going to see them on Nickelodeon.

Right, they are, but they aren't just Asian names. Most of the names have multiple origins. You are very right with Water Tribe names, but to say that all of the names on that show are strictly Asian names is crazy. There are thousands of names that may have Asian roots, but they might also have Fillipino roots, or Greek roots. I wasn't saying that anyone was wrong, but that there isn't really a need to get all flustered because someone picked an Ancient Greek name like Leon, because a good chunk of names in ATLA and LoK have multiple origins; some of the names don't even have Asian origin whatsoever.
