Description One of the greatest parents in the Arthropod world, the Parent Beetles (Parenticoleopterids) are incredibly dedicated to protecting their young. One of the largest species, the 27 cm long Spiny Parent Beetle (Parenticoleopterus Aculeatus) take this a step further an actually carry their larvae under their Elytra. During this time the parent is vulnerable, as they cannot fly to find food, or escape predators. For this reason, The Spiny Parent Beetle form monogamous pairs that stayed bonded for their entire lives. The average female Spiny Parent Beetle lays between 1-4 eggs, and will tuck them under her elytra. The Mother and Father will take turns from then on carrying the eggs and then larva, until each larva enters their pupal stage. Once the young enter the pupal stage, they are taken to a tree and burrowed into the bark by the parents. The reason for these adaptations in behavior is due to the amount of subterranean predators that could devour the pupating larvae.
