HezuNeutral created a seedrian picrew a while back. (link: www.deviantart.com/hezuneutral/art/SEEDRIAN-PICREW-838325812). If you don't know what that means, Seedrians are a fictional species of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and picrew is a website to create pictures/characters by assembling assets you can choose from.

Hezu's game has a randomize option (instead of assembling a picture yourself, the bot randomly creates something). To be quite frank, the results of randomized pictures mostly look terrible. But I did it anyway and randomly got this character design: sta.sh/01jl4wig0j1b ). I said (on April 19th, 2020) I'd turn this into a new character but the colors clashed so badly (as to be expected of a randomizer like this).

But, using some basic elements of what I got, I created this new character. I eliminated the yellow and brown colors as they clashed too much with the rest.

Anyway, that's how you can be inspired to create new designs.
