Description Finally.  I was having issues uploading this earlier because of some error messages.  I notified DA about it though, so hopefully it won't happen again.

Anyway, don't worry, I haven't stopped doing character art for FE: Dawn of Darkness (my main Fire Emblem fic for those that don't know). This is Natalie, another one of the Talgrian knights (who was named before I knew FE7's Natalie existed), shown wielding a silver sword.  I personally think she's one of my better character designs, as I love the pastel-like color scheme I came up with.  Her tunic was originally a totally different color, but I decided to change it.  And I think this looks much better!  Changing her sprites to match this won't take long either, as her tunic barely shows in them.  It's also a good thing I never actually stated what color it was in the story context.  Heh.  Oh, I've also stopped using all black for my lineart.  I use various colors now!  But on to more info.

Natalie is the deputy commander of the Talgrian Royal Knights, acting as the right hand of Leyon, who is the general and one of Allied Command’s most prominent military leaders. She's strongly dedicated to her duty and is quite serious about serving the knights to the best of her ability. However, she also seems to have high expectations of the warriors she serves with. This shows in her tendency to belittle those she believes to lack the skill to be excellent on the battlefield. In particular, her fellow knight Marc has been subject to her criticism due to his mild short-term memory loss, and she’s nearly been driven into a homicidal rage by another knight, Eliot, who seems the very personification of clumsiness. Despite this, Leyon has sometimes voiced the opinion that Eliot is a good match for her, if only because they sometimes have amusing quarrels.

However, Natalie also has a softer, more sensitive side. For some time prior to the events of Dawn of Darkness, she has held an unrequited love for Leyon. Though he seems oblivious to her feelings, she nonetheless supports and defends him at all costs. Her past crush, however, causes a bitter rivalry to develop between her with Azura after Leyon grows increasingly interested in the red-headed sword fighter. His initial overture, however, goes quite badly when Azura, valuing her independence and viewing his gesture as condescending, rebukes him and mistakenly causes him be seriously injured during a battle. As might be expected, Natalie blamed Azura for Leyon’s mishap and the pair came to blows. After Leyon recovers and he and Azura reconcile, Natalie adamantly hides her heartbreak when the pair of them finally let their romance blossom; though, her sadness may have eased after Eliot went on to save her life and she began to see that there was a good man behind his bumbling exterior.

Natalie is also revealed to have an acute fear of heights, paralleling Azura's near-hysterical fear of spiders. Their rivalry continues even after Natalie finally puts to rest her old feelings for Leyon, though the hostility seeps out of it and the two women become a little friendlier.

As a unit, Natalie has a few more ironic commonalities with Azura, despite them being very different classes as a nod to their rivalry. They both use swords, they both have resistance as their best stat, and neither of them have very good strength. However, they do still have some important differences, beyond such obvious things as Natalie using a horse and Azura going on foot. Natalie has better defense while Azura is much faster. She gains the ability to use axes upon promotion while Azura gains lances. But, compared with her fellow knights, Natalie is the most adept at resisting magic and, since her defense isn't bad either, she can even be called a little tanky. She's probably the weakest of all the cavalier knights, however, in terms of physical strength.

Oh, hey there Deimos! Long time no see. ^^

Thanks so much, I had a feeling that arm was slightly off. I'm glad I'm not wrong about that. I may be able to do something about it once my laptop is fixed, we'll see.

But I'm happy I've gotten so much better.

Hey there, sorry about the delay. My sister flew in from New York for Thanksgiving, and I had to do a fair bit of tidying up at the office. Anyhow, this is an excellent piece. I really like the whole ready-for-action posed you've got going here. It kinda reminds me of Mia's Swordmaster stance, actually. Getting back on topic, though, I also like the details you put into the sword, such as how the blade expands near the tip and the designs on the hilt. The work you did on the armor and surcoat is also great, and the intensity of her expression is also a nice touch. I'm also glad you liked my edited bio of her so much. I did notice one small fault in the bio. You see how it says "a bitter rivalry to develop between her with Azura"? That "with" should be "and". Sorry about that. Also, these ironic parallels between Natalie and Azura are quite interesting, as is Natalie being somewhat atypical as paladins go. "A little tanky" is definitely counter-intuitive, at least to my eyes, as far as paladins go. But, these little quirks you work in help to set the units apart and keep things interesting. Anyhow, thanks for your patience, and I'll keep you posted on the chapter. Catch you later.

Oh, that's understandable. ^^ Great that Betsy could make it!

Yeah, that was the kind of pose I was going for.  Thanks so much, I'm glad the details came out so well.

D'oh, I'll fix that right away. I'm glad my quirks have worked out for the better though.

No, unfortunately.  We were considering going up to Pittsburgh, but my mom changed her mind.  We'll just be staying here and getting my stepbrother's family over.  They still live in town, but they'll be leaving because his girlfriend got a scholarship in Colorado.  She's like the closest thing I ever got to a sister.

Now that I think about it, I kinda wish it had been southern California so I'd have an excuse to see you as well if I visited. XD

Interesting you mention this, because we've sometimes had people from outside the family join us for Thanksgiving dinner. Both were friends of my sisters, if I recall. I think you would've enjoyed joining us, assuming you don't mind trying to tell apart the vegan and non-vegan portions of the meal. Catherine's a vegan, you see. I think my folks would enjoy meeting you. They're a bit wacky, but, having known me for a while, you probably guessed that.

Anacybele In reply to Falchion1984 [2013-11-28 14:34:19 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I bet I would enjoy it!  But I'd hate to be away from my own family as well.  Still, things like this will happen sometimes if you have a close companion like a best friend or spouse.  You'd have to choose whose family to spend something with...

A bit wacky?  If you looked up wacky in the dictionary, my stepdad's picture would fit right there by the definition.  Trust me, I'm used to "a bit wacky" lol.  He's also a little overprotective, however...

Anyway, I can assume Catherine won't be eating any turkey then.  I never actually eat much either, I'm not a fan of turkey, really.

I myself prefer turkey in pot pie, actually. There was some consideration given to "consolidating" our Thanksgiving with a neighboring family whose attendance was lacking, but we found out too close to showtime. Anyhow, it was just us six this year. I'm not sure if I've told you this already, but we got a new dog. I think this has become his favorite holiday, since he got a few "safe" bits of turkey and just loved them. Didn't stop him from chewing on everybody's fingers though. Boy, do I hope he's done teething soon. So, did things go well on your end?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anacybele In reply to Falchion1984 [2013-11-29 14:48:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, pot pies are good.  I just don't like that they're so hot and take so long to cool off.

An I see, six is still fine. We had seven people counting my little niece.  Could've been eight, but my other stepbrother got himself into more trouble earlier in the year, so we didn't want him around.  And yeah, you told me about the dog. lol My dogs got a turkey flavored meal themselves with some of the meat and broth in their regular food.  Champ wolfed it down in minutes.  Buddy's a bit of a slower eater, but he ate it all too and then went to lick Champ's bowl clean.  At least we never have to wash their bowls.

And yeah, they did, for the most part.  We had a power outage.  In the evening.  Leaving us in the dark for about an hour. >_> It's been happening rather frequently lately because of the electric box outside.  But hopefully the electric guys actually fixed it this time (my mom said they'd been out here the day before).  And the Steelers' season is now probably over, not so much because they lost last night's game, but because their star running back got hurt badly in a helmet-to-helmet collision, and without him, the team has no run game, which means the offense is partly shot.  I don't know if he'll be able to play next weekend.  They have to check him for a possible concussion.  Normally, a helmet-to-helmet is illegal (because it's very dangerous to players), but in this case, both players that caused it didn't lower their shoulders in time (to make it shoulder-to-shoulder instead, which is much safer).  It was just one big accident. -_-

Our Mr. Darcy, who is every bit as much a sissy boy as the name implies, left us in a quandary, actually. We knew that, if he was penned up with all of us in the dining room, he'd whine through the whole meal. But, if we let him in with us, it might blow a hole or two in the notion that he's not supposed to leave the kitchen/TV room. Ultimately, we decided that we'd have to have him with us. Dad spent half the meal watching Darcy to make sure he didn't relieve himself on one of the rugs while Betsy kept on making dire predictions thereof. Charming, huh? Well, as always, mom whipped up a delightful meal. Dad, as might be expected, loved watching his football, while Betsy and Catherine introduced Darcy to the Purina Dog Show. Sounds like you dodged a bullet with that power outage. Might've made things interesting if it had lasted longer or happened during the cooking phase, and not in a good way. I know you mentioned you didn't like turkey. Did you try duck or goose instead?

Anacybele In reply to Falchion1984 [2013-11-30 01:44:12 +0000 UTC]

lol sissy boy. XD

Haha, charming indeed.  My mom did the cooking here too, and as always, she did a great job.  She usually makes home-made stuffing from a recipe she got from her grandma, but she chose not to do it this year.  I think it was because of a lack of time.

Yeah, we sure did dodge a bullet with that power outage.  We were lucky that it didn't happen during the cooking or during the football game.

No, I've never tried goose or duck.  Or lamb or rabbit or venison.  I don't want to eat those animals, I find them too cute. xP

I have duck often at Dim Sum, and goose at most Christmas dinners. I have lamb every now and then, and love it in gyros. What else can I say? I'm an omnivore. Doubling back to my question though, did you cook something besides turkey? You mentioned earlier that you weren't fond of it.

Hey there. I'm making some progress in the chat between Bryan and Vorcas. I was out quite a bit on Sunday and Monday, but I got some brainstorms while I was out and about. Well, it happens. Lately, my browser has actually been acting strangely. Anyhow, way back, my Windows 98 fried itself. We found this place that does data recovery. They got all the data off of my old hard drive and transferred it to a new XP. When I later got a Vista, I had the data from my XP moved over, but it cost less since there was no data recovery needed. The warning that the XP was about to go came in time, you see. The place I took it to is called Advanced Data Solutions, but I don't think they have branches outside of California. If you're willing to ship it over here to get it fixed, I can give you the links. Or, you could look up places closer to you. Just google "data recovery" and your state, and you'll likely get something. And, take my advice: in addition to the thumb drive, use an external hard drive and an online backup system, like Mozy, to give yourself some cover against this happening again. Well, please let me know what happens next, and catch you later.

Hey there, I heard the news on your journal. So, you were able to find a data recovery shop, or was that provided by Dell? Well, in any case, I'm glad you'll be able to get your data back. And, like I said, consider getting online backup and an external hard drive as a hedge against this sort of thing happening again. Anyhow, I hope the new laptop works out, and please let me know. Catch you later.

Anacybele In reply to Falchion1984 [2013-12-07 20:42:46 +0000 UTC]

No, Dell is repairing my laptop. There's no need to do a data recovery thing at all because I won't need a new computer.

I do have an external hard drive somewhere, so yeah, I plan to find it and make use of it once my laptop is up and running again.

And I will.

Falchion1984 In reply to Anacybele [2013-12-07 23:16:40 +0000 UTC]

Ah, coolness. One thing you might want to check out is the backup settings on your computer. With it, you can set up your laptop to periodically copy everything on your hard drive onto the external. Saves you the trouble of doing it manually, you see. On a side note, I just got Gangrel. It was simpler than I'd expected, but getting him up to the standards of the other Shepherds might be tricky. With regards to DoD, I have a question. I was thinking that the explanations should be broken into two segments, first Owen's and then Eric's. These would both take place during the evening Leyon rejoins them, but in separate parts of the camp. That work, or would you prefer something else?

Anacybele In reply to Falchion1984 [2013-12-07 23:52:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh, cool! Thanks for telling me that, Falchion, that'll be a big help.

And really? I'd think getting Gangrel would be challenging, cause as you said, Chrom has to talk to him multiple times.

Well, I think I'd rather both explanations be in the same scene. Because they're related to the same incident and all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Falchion1984 In reply to Anacybele [2013-12-08 06:53:21 +0000 UTC]

I'd been doing some ludicrous grinding, and had Chrom maxed out. I had him wait, unequipped, to talk to Gangrel. Other foes tried to whack him, but they all missed. I also got Walhart, Emmeryn, and Yen'Fey. Getting Aversa is tough, though. She keeps getting mulched by the enemy. Well, I'll keep at it. Anyhow, you mean the same scene, but not the same tent, as I'd suggested, right? Please let me know, and catch you later.

I agree.  I don't get why Emmeryn can't support with her siblings or why Say'ri can't support with Yen'fay.  It wouldn't hurt for Gangrel to support with Aversa either.  Also, for some reason, I was never able to get Emmeryn.  Her paralogue remained out of reach after I added it to the map.  Do you have to complete the main story first?  I never did open my file again after doing so...

Anacybele In reply to LightingLife [2013-11-25 17:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's easy.  I like to describe it in three steps.

1. Sketch the character on paper

2. Go over it in lineart and color in Photoshop

3. Shade it and add the watermark to the parchment background

And that's it!  I only really need to use the brush and pen tools for this.  Hopefully though, I'll get a pen tablet for Christmas so I can eliminate the sketch phase entirely!  At the very least, it'll make doing these artworks faster. ^^

I don't think ALL of them are amazing though.  My earliest ones have some pretty crappy coloring and lineart compared what I can do today.  Otherwise, they aren't too bad.  Thanks so much though.
