Description This is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I've become spoiled by games that let you actually pick your gender, so when I run across games that let you customize everything BUT the gender, I get irritated.

Maybe I'd like to play a badass woman spy/soldier/superhuman goddammit D:
And yes, I understand that in the long run it's just easier for the developers to only have to worry about one voice/body type/reactions from NPCs, etc, but still.

Please tell me I'm not the only female gamer who feels this way.

Funny!

I must say I only halfway agree with your comic. On one hand I fully agree that there's still lots of games where you can only play as a male character. However all those have a fully "pre-designed" main character. I've never seen one where you can actually customize your main character to begin with, but not choose gender.
You should give Crusader Kings 2 a try BTW, go Cognatic Elective Succession and you can have your dynasty ruled by an unbroken chain of female monarchs.

Well with Games of late I think in Customize they do make sure to have both Options in both Male/Female it's only Games that have a Destined Character that is already to begin with that Gender then I can look passed even if you have options with them

Not even the only gamer period. I often play a female character if given the option. Especially if they're voiced by Jennifer Hale. She is serious "ear candy".

I am freaking in love with your chibis' facial expressions. You could seriously write gibberish in all the text bubbles of your comics and I would still lol like an idiot.

I feel the same way! Most developers are so used to their main audience being male, but the number of female gamers is rising quickly and they can't seem to keep up. Slackers...

Now we just need to convince them to stop making so many female characters blatant eye candy :\

Ha, you're far from the only woman who feels this way. Trust me. One of the things I immediately loved about ME was the choice to pick gender. I was like "Wait, I get to be a woman? I don't have to have over-sexualized women thrown at me the whole game? People will not address me as a man? Are you for reals?" It was so wonderful. Now whenever I play games that force a gender I can't help but be a little annoyed.

Bioware has pretty much raised the bar to an extreme degree for me. They're not the first/only developer to give you the gender option, but the fact that she is every bit as much of a badass soldier as her male counterpart is something sorely lacking in a lot of games. She's not in any way a sex symbol, and I appreciate that so much.

yaaaaaaah i know what you mean, but hey, not every company can afford a second voice actor or make their writers work out two versions of the scripts so you end up hitting on an attractive dude instead of titties mc' back-problems XD

Ambuneko-Yomikage In reply to sordcooper2 [2011-07-26 23:30:30 +0000 UTC]

I KNOW, RIGHT? Why the hell does every love interest have to have tits bigger than the continent and population of Asia? Can't people who like smaller boobs (say, A-cups) have anyone to romance? Not that big boobs are unattractive (at least, done resonably (see Mass Effect's few busty women.)), it's just that there's a limit to what the human spine can support, and that's the point when it gets to be too much.

sordcooper2 In reply to Ambuneko-Yomikage [2011-07-27 01:02:02 +0000 UTC]

......yah i dont give a shit if the love interest has double G cups, im just referring to the occasional generic love interest who's only real characteristic is 'oh look i have boobs'. and while we're on the subject: fuck being realistic, games are for escapism and fantasy, you want things to look more real so you get lost in it easier but you dont blow upwards of 400 bucks for a system, controllers, and games to do something you can do in real life, and i sure as shit dont blow that kind of cash to have my romance side quest be an a cup! BRING ON TITIES Mc BACKPROBLEMS I SAY!... as long as her personality isnt just her boobs nailed to a plywood plank

I don't even care THAT much about customization, personally. I'd just like the chance to play a woman in more games-- especially ones that give you an option between two or more men already. :<

yeah I know what you mean, I always seem to play the women over the men in games, so i hate it when there's only men. like assassin's creed. but that's awesome, so i let it slide

they're not the only developers that give the choice, but they do a better job of it than most.

CommodoreZeke [2011-07-25 08:58:34 +0000 UTC]

I guess it depends on how much plot the game has. If there's a lot, and the player character figures heavily in it, the writers will need things like gender and age to be under their control. But if it's a less plotty game or one where the player characters are secondary to NPCs (like the early Final Fantasies), there's room for more flexibility.

amiko16 In reply to CommodoreZeke [2011-07-26 04:05:39 +0000 UTC]

For certain games, yes, it doesn't really bother me that the character is specific.
But in other games, where the story isn't ironclad, or where they give you a choice to pick from a batch of male characters (like in games like Alpha Protocol or Far Cry 2), I don't understand why they don't include at least one female.

End-Thus-I-Am [2011-07-25 08:41:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I mean I haven't played more than two games where I could customize but couldn't choose a male. But it is annoying when developers say how we can customize so much, but they leave out certain details.

My rooks tend to remain unmoving for as long as possible... As to my Queen, she's either an autodefense, or a, "Wait, I have a queen?".

But the lack of female options in some games irritates me, too... If you're gonna have a customiser, have one, or don't. No reason to be half-assed about it.
