New(ish) story time! This is Naia (short for Manaia), one of the quartet of main characters in the story whose working title is "Steampunk Lesbians" because I can't think of anything better. It's a complex story of corruption, tragedy, loss, power, natural disaster, tumultuous social change, loyalty, freedom, personal growth, and, yes, love. My story-forging philosophy, as you can probably guess from that long list of plot/theme descriptors, is "go big or go home."
Naia herself is an upbeat, exuberant, energetic young woman with the intelligence and creativity of a born inventor, who grew up in a state-run orphanage reading romanticized and exciting stories of the Free Pilots who sailed across the skies, aiding the poor and cleverly outwitting the evil Merchant's Guild ships. When she enters the underworld the Free Pilots dwell in, however, she finds that reality doesn't match up to her rosy imaginings. And also... what's with these big skeletal birds flying around that no one else seems to be able to see?

This painting was done entirely digitally, no pencils anywhere near it. However, I missed the texture of paper. I used a texture by winryie that has since been put in storage, so I can't link to it.

P.S. Remind me to never try painting a full scenery background again.
