Description Completed: April 2003
Medium: Oil on black satin

Do you remember the way that you touched me before
All the trembling sweetness I loved and adored
Your face saying promised whispered like prayers
I don't need them
Oh, I need the darkness
The sweetness
The sadness
The weakness
Oh, I need this..

This is my self-portrait entitled "Sub-Rosa" done on black satin (You can see the black satin showing through as my hair) primed with gel gloss medium in oil paint.. I thought that the title was rather fitting.. During critique, my professor mentioned that it looked rather mysterious because the texture under the skin hints that something is hiding underneath.. The interplay between what is "beneath" also adds to it, as the hair is over the face and obscuring the right eye, but the painting of the face is actually over the hair..

A boy in my class actually commented that he wished that I painted the right eye.. I intended to leave a hollow gap there, as a symbol of my vision.. I have been blind in my right eye since childhood, so my left eye dominates.. In metaphysics, a person who is left-eye dominant views the world through emotions while a person who is right-eye dominant experiences the physical and active part of life..

I love the mystery of the hair covering your eye and the texture under your skin.

wow. i love how the hair is lightly grazing the lips--and those eye just capture the viewer. it's so gorgeous. i also like how there is a mixture of color in the hair, and not just straight on black--it gives depth and a real feeling of hair. so brilliant! amazing work.

There's something behind this that I can feel, from the first second I saw it in the thumbnail.

This is beautiful, and you're right, the first thing that occured to me when I saw this was the mystery you described. I love all the different colors you've blended into the skin, and into the texture of the hair. And the contrast between the pale skin and dark hair is really eye-catching.

I've never even thought of painting on satin before... I bet the original is amazing

Who's that girl in the painting, Alice? Tell her I love her.

Gently persuasive; loose and spontaneous where it should be, comprehensive and precise everywhere else; terrific!

i like the mixing of colors. the way there are other slightly hidden colors on the skin and the messy yet silky shiny hair might relate to something you feel inside
