Made for set RD (Royal Domain) which is themed around ruler and heavenly Digimon.
We used our ordinary model/texture modification, and posing/lighting process to make this art.

We've been taking the lore behind Starmon admiring the brave Leomon a bit too far in our card design. This one is based on the V-Tamer 01 manga Starmon. It's a self-claimed star (celebrity) of Star City. As a hot-blooded personality Digimon, we imagined it had a poster of Leomon in its dressing room, which inspires it. At some point, it learns its hero became a great leader of delinquent, family-less Digimon. But we also imagined a tragedy to BanchouLeomon, since Leomons can't catch a break (well, it's related but a different Digimon). Starmon finds BanchouLeomon passing away, receives some inspiring words, inherits its gakuran and therefore 男気（spirit of masculinity）and walks off partly mournful, partly determined. By taking that first, difficult step toward a new destiny, Starmon's inner self ascends. Well, that was just a joke story we came up with one day and then we made it into real art for some reason...

The actual art shows the evolution begin at the foot where Starmon's first step began because we wanted to directly link its practice of moving on with its metamorphosis. This is to dispel the notion that the gakuran itself is somehow the cause. It's a bit weak to treat the school uniform as a fetish of power, since my understanding of BanchouLeomon is based in its unyielding practice of values rather than simply having an object. In my mind, if Starmon took that step with a wavering heart, there would be no effect.

In the card game, "Banchou" Digimon require you to have at least 1 KO to evolve to them. The Banchou evolve card (this) works the opposite, by allowing powerful evolution directly to Stage V when the opponent has a KO. In the art, the KO is represented by BanchouLeomon itself ascending to the heavens. It's within the spirit of someone getting beaten down and standing up stronger that is typical in Shounen manga. Though I don't claim to know how boys really think, we probably got close with this card!
