"The 'Blades of Onyx' are a secretive band of mercenary Astartes that long ago exiled themselves from the Imperium and survive by selling their services to Rogue Traders and various xenos races. Their origins are unknown, though some Imperial scholars have pointed to extant records and various eye-witness accounts, placing them at various events that have occurred throughout Imperial history for the last ten millennia. The Blades of Onyx are the remnants of a cross-legion taskforce of Astartes, originally formed during the Great Crusade . They were gathered to tackle an aggressive xenos coalition that was threatening Imperial space from the Ghoul Stars and to bring into compliance any human colonies that remained in that region. Following the initial success of their mission, the taskforce experienced an odyssey of failure and misadventure in their efforts to return to the Imperium. When they finally returned, they found an Imperium wracked by civil war and became Blackshields, fearing retribution for those brothers that hailed from the legions branded traitors. Forced to retreat back to the void beyond Imperial control, the survivors dwindled further, losing the majority of their number and their leader. Forced to become mercenaries for hire, they adopted the name Blades of Onyx. Over the subsequent 10,000 years of conflict, they have decayed to a shadow of themselves, and remain labelled as traitors by the Imperium.
