Description
Waiting for the bell to ring, signaling the end of the excruciatingly long school day, I sat at my desk in my Algebra class. Bouncing my leg up and down, like people typically do when they’re bored, the old rickety desk squeaked with every movement. They really need to replace those damned desks, anyway. Or tighten the screws, or something. My eyes were glazed over, and my book and pencils were long gone off my desk. To be completely honest with you, there’s no point in having them on your desk any longer than the half-way point, when class is halfway over. We never do anything productive after then, anyway. It’s like clockwork, everyday after reading over 3 pages in the book, and doing exactly 15 problems from the book, our teacher, Mr. Smith, would stumble to the back of the room and sit at his desk and drink his coffee. That man did more coffee drinking than teaching, I swear.
Of course, having a name as boring as ‘Mr. Smith’, you’d most likely be boring too. Which was just the case with him. He had no personality, he wasn’t one of those teachers who gave even the tiniest sliver of concern about what the students had to say. In fact, I don’t think he cared much about anything other than getting through all the material in the math book, so that he could earn more money.
Tick, tick, tick.
I’m not sure why, but I always stare at the clock as its hands take their final trip around the clock, and just dare them to slow down or stop. It usually seems like they slow down right before something you’re anticipating. I could see the reflection of the windows at the back of the room on the clock’s face. A distorted yellow rectangle pulled into view, and then I heard the brakes. The busses were early today.
Somehow, I dazed off within the last 45 seconds of class, and when the bell rang, it scared the crap out of me. I awoke from my sleep, if you can even call it that, with a frightened jolt. I ended up being unsure of where I was, and what time it was. It took a moment for me to register the things going on around me, but as soon as I was up to date on everything, I picked up my backpack, slung it over my right shoulder, and walked slowly to the door. Same as every other day.
Now, you’re probably wondering why I didn’t run out the door, worry about being late for my bus, or any of that rushing stuff. The reason will surely make you think I’m crazy.
