that is soooo cool!!!! The fact that you used an old Zenit lens makes it so much better, I'm about to try out my dad's old Zenit camera

Many thanks for your interest! Here is proof that this is real snowflake:
"before and after" table for compare, source shots can be opened in full 12 mp resolution:

unprocessed source shot of this snowflake. It have much worse quality because this is only one jpeg from serie of identical shots,
and final result made from averaged stack of RAWs with custom sharpening and noise removing:

I don't think that's actually how to determine whether or not a snowflake is real.Β
It looks totally real, and beautiful as well. I don't think something like this could be faked.Β

I LOVE snowflake photos! These are such beautiful works of art by Nature, and so so fleeting, it's amazing when you are able to catch one like this. Congrats on the DD, very well deserved!

Wow, thanks! Deep mysteries & beauty in something as common as water.Β
Somehow it reminds me of the Mandelbrot set, just transposed to the physical realm.

Your snowflake photos are much better than the ones I've gotten. D: (...it's snowing outside now, but I don't really feel like going outside and trying to get pictures...)
Hmm... you ever see really fuzzy white snowflakes? I've seen that kind of snow at least twice, but didn't have my camera available during them. Those types of snowflakes would probably be interesting to see up close.

Alexey-Kljatov In reply to AsjJohnson [2013-12-06 20:30:54 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Yes, with warm weather, snowflakes often covered by rime. It may looks as ice bubbles covered surface of snowflake, and sometimes that rime so strong that snowflake resembles white pillow and completely opaque.

Oh. I tried looking up rime, and I found this online. www.its.caltech.edu/~atomic/snβ¦Β That's probably what I've seen before. ^_^

Oh! I saw some of these pictures on a website a few weeks ago and it inspired me to try a few snowflake shots of my own. They obviously didn't look anything like this, but it was still fun.
These are just really mesmerizing...
