were you actually using fire or just ultra bright glowsticks?

it's fire. i've only tried glowstick raving once, and they're actually kinda hard because they're so light...

fire's more fun anyway.

It also works well to use clothes line or some other thin rope, slice an opening in each side of the tennis ball, tie a knot in the rope, and pull it through.

But pretty much any materials work. Check out:

Oh my gosh, you mean this is real? When I first saw this, I thought it had to be a computer effect. That's how amazing it is.

Thanks! It doesn't look quite that spectacular in actuality; the shot was a long exposure one. Well, only a few seconds, so not that long, but long enough to get that effect.

Lots of fun though. ^.^

Thats really cool, I really like how the subject(the man) stays in focus on such a slow shutter speed, and how the picture is not washed out by the flames. Did you use bulb(relating to shutter speed) or a tripod(big three legged thing that stedys[sp?] you camra) for this picture? (also) Was this taken with a digital camra or a 35mm camra(if so what film resulution[don't know if that is the right word XP] [ex:400]) Thank you and again, very cool picture.

Aldalambe In reply to Zimantha [2006-06-05 19:41:09 +0000 UTC]

By the way, the guy doing the fire is me. The deviation is an ID.

Digital camera, no tripod. The way you take pictures of fire without flooding everything out is by both using a flash and keeping the exposure open for a while (only a second or two in this case, I was spinning pretty fast). Often digital cameras will have a "nighttime" setting that does roughly the same thing.

If you just use a flash, the fire barely looks like anything. If you don't, the fire is completely white and the rest of the picture is too dark to see. Found this out the hard way.
