DESCRIPTION:

The “Lant” are Guardian Spirits, which are specialized spiritual creatures that were created to protect the Sacred Cities, especially Shade Town and Twilight Village.

Lant can only be created by La’e-la [lah-ay-luh], the Goddess of Lights. They have Lung-like forms, four wings, four arms, small heads, no whiskers, horns/antlers covering their eyes, and half their tails are string-like. They move very slowly when manually moving; however, they usually maneuver around by fading into a shadowy state, and when in this shadow form they move very fast. Lant’s chests are hollow and contain lamps that hold the flame of what is believed to be a phoenix; this flame is what gives the Lant their life, since they have no vital organs and would otherwise be clinically dead.

The Lant are responsible for lighting the lamps that light the Sacred Cities as well as temples; they light them in the evening and put them out at dawn. To light a lamp, a Lant will open up its chest where the heart would be and lowers the lamp in its chest. The Lant uses the larger pair of its arms, which have large and hooked claws at their end, to gently cradle the lamp. Then it uses its smaller but longer and more humanoid-like arms to take hold of the lap and to raise it up, placing it in the hook of the Lant-Post; the Lant is now considered to be ‘undead’ and most of them lye next to their post and seemingly fall asleep, with the rest becoming more ghost-like and disappearing. They repeat this procedure until all the lamps are lit.

Putting the light out is just as holy as lighting it in the first place. The Lant is the only creature allowed to put the lamps out at dawn; anyone caught attempting to touch the fire in the lamps will be arrested on-sight. To put their light out, the Lant—which have kept their own lamps out all night long while keeping guard over the city—return to the lamppost they had lit the night before and reach up with their long arms and take hold of the flame, then return the lamp to their chest cavity, revitalizing their power and energy and life. They do this until all the flames have been recollected, then they disappear to rest until the next evening.

Because they have the flame of a phoenix in their chests, Lant breathe out a sort of ‘breath of life’, differing with the elemental flame they protect. This breath that they give off is responsible for the long life and health of the community they protect, as well as for the environment and animals and plants within it. The Lant’s lant-posts protect the city/village/town/etc by giving off sacred auras, and the lights keep evil spirits from the area. Obviously, Lant are very important to the life and vitality of a large city or village/etc. Because of this, anyone seen responsible for killing a Lant is often either killed or thrown out—all except one sort of person.

Sometimes, when someone is very ill or even dead, a Lant will give up its flame to them to heal the said person or to even bring them back to life. The Lant, without its flame to give its empty body life, dies [though it can be revived with another flame, so many consider this state as a sort of hibernation], but the person it saves is said to have special powers according to the element of the flame given to him or her. The person usually has very long life—sometimes even immortality—and have a special connection with Lant, Lung, and phoenixes of the same element. These people are known as La’uunt [lah-oon’t], and they very often become Priests or Priestesses and are seen as very lucky.
