You know, the sad thing is I had a [college] English teacher try to tell me I made a mistake in an essay I wrote because they didn't know the word "devolve."
Before that, a different college English teacher insinuated I plagiarized on an essay because it was too good. He told me "It sounds like something out of a fantasy novel." (Note that it was meant to be a descriptive essay written about a person; rather than write about someone I knew, I instead chose to write about one of my original characters.) Apparently it didn't seem plausible I could be that far ahead of my classmates.
...and I'm not even a good writer.

My teachers in high school weren't that way, just these shitty "English 101" type college professors. They actually made me wish for my high school teachers back (hell, my high school Physics teacher was better about proofreading than they were!). In general, I don't write much and I don't consider myself very good at it, but I do try my best when I do have to write. But then I also have pretty high standards for literature, as my best friend is an actual writer with a degree for it, and I do enjoy reading.

Well, no, it was the "basic" English classes of an undergraduate degree. I think the highest level is going for your Master's or doctorate or whatever. Still, teaching in a university where the students have to PAY MONEY for such nonsense is...absolutely ridiculous.

I agree completely in regards to the quality of grammar and spelling. People really, REALLY need to pay more attention to stuff like that, because if something is written correctly it can be incredibly painful, and in the worse cases all but incomprehensible.
In regards to self-insertion, I don't think it's necessarily bad in and of itself. It's just that in the vast majority of cases, it's done incredibly poorly. I think it can be done right, just that it very rarely actually is. At a bare minimum, if your self-insert is actually from the setting you're writing in, you need to give them a plausible background to hold the qualities you're giving them from yourself, just as you do with any other character.
I have little opinion on most of the other things, though in general people need to be sure to make the actions of the characters they're writing for actually be, well, in-character for them. If you want them doing something that they wouldn't have done in the time of the original work, show the character development away from where they were and toward where you'd want them to be. This can't be managed in a short story, but, well, that's too bad if it's what you want. People need to be willing to put some effort into the quality of their writing. If they aren't, but are sharing the products of their personal fantasies anyway, they really have no right to attempt to defend its quality, since it's, well, extremely lacking.

Shadow-of-Burakku [2011-07-03 11:30:29 +0000 UTC]
I agree in the context of poor grammar of people abusing their own native language; it's insulting...even more so when most people actually treat schools like a day-care center instead of a place for their children to learn, and therefore don't give a shit about their grades (I've known several kids and teenagers whose parents were exactly like that throughout my life). Result? Poor grammar and low intelligence.
Not that I should be removed from this equation xD But that's beside the point.
However, I've been guilty of self-insert...but once was for comedic purposes only, and was intended to be ridiculous, so I imagine that's pardonable to a degree... I'm also guilty of creating a Mary-Sue...though she's not as bad as quite a few other Mary-Sues I've come across.
I've never inserted random foreign language words in my stories unless in a character's dialogue, but needlessly inserting 'kawaii' and 'baka' in the description or whatever--I find it irritating to no end...almost as much as poor spelling and grammar (not quite, though).
I digress further...
I attempted to make a cross-over between Law of Talos and Fullmetal Alchemist with a (dead-obvious) touch of Kyokudo, but I have yet to actually go anywhere with that So don't worry about that.
Oh, did you know about the FMA/HP cross-over nonsense (crossing science fiction with fantasy)? Just the lack of plausibility keeps me away from that without even touching those fanfics.
I've only ever been blatantly guilty of turning characters homosexual once, and that was actually a request story for an at-the-time friend. Otherwise, I never really made characters change their sexual orientation...just been framed of following the usual Seme/Uke formula typically found in your average mpreg fanfic (not on the story itself, but on a doodle I made loosely based on my mpreg fanfic). I actually find that formula irritating, and have yet to continue reading fanfics that blatantly follow that same formula. As for the mpreg concept itself...well, let's just say that even in the story, the characters question how exactly it was done and rule it an impossibility that somehow made itself possible (sad deduction, I know, and I don't have any excuses for it other than I wanted to prove that neither 'participant' was happy with the outcome).
*sigh* Sorry for the rant...though I'm sure this is far from the first you've come across in your Comments section.
Just really needed to get a few things off my chest (I also tend to rant anyway, which doesn't help).

I don't think it's elitist...I think it should be a requirement.
>.>
I used to mix up "then" and "than" when I first started to write (and I still have trouble with homonyms at times), and nobody bothered to correct me (not even my teachers; I eventually looked it up and figured it out, myself), but that's usually the worst of my own grammatical issues.
I'd like to put that stamp in the review boxes of lots of fanfiction writers...especially the ones that post stories as WALLS OF TEXT.
I have a LOT of issues with fanfiction at times...I even made a webcomic (which I might revive...dunno) to express my dislike (mostly for Mary Sues/self inserts...they die a lot in my comics) because I can't bring myself to flame even the worst of authors.
Sometimes, I come across stories from people whose native language isn't English...and those stories are written better than people whose native language is English.
Once, I came across something that had an interesting concept, but was just too terrible format and grammatical (and spelling) wise to read; the level of writing made me think the person was either around 10-12 years old, or didn't speak English...
...checked their profile page, and found that not only is their native language English, but they had recently graduated HIGH SCHOOL when they wrote that story.
I think I sat there for five minutes in pure, horrified shock.

The problem is that people tell its their fanfiction and that they're just doing it for fun.
Seriously, I mean English is my third language and sometimes I can't understand anything from what is being said
Anyway, when a fanfiction is written this bad it looses a lot, I normally feel like I am missing something, and I usually don't continue reading it.

Nothing irks me more than a comic with chatspeak and very messed up grammar .-.
CHATSPEAK IS SO ONE CAN TYPE FAST.
If your making a comic, your obviously taking time, plus, seeing "u r so dumb u viline of dumb!!!!" is hard to read, and even if it's a very serious point, and the drawings are fantastic and it looks very dramatic, that in the side looks like a parody of something .-.
Sorry, done with my rant x3
