Description A Praetorian Guard of the Roman Empire (27 BCE–476 CE).

The Praetorians were the bodyguard unit of the Roman generals during the Roman Republic (510 BCE–27 BCE). Later when the Roman Empire was established, their role became more like that of a public security force under the direct control of the emperor. Compare to the average legionary, they were paid better and the length of service was shorter. As the only armed forces within the city of Rome, the Praetorians abused their power more often than not and involved themselves in political theatre, sometimes even dismissing and replacing the emperor to their liking. The Praetorian Guard was finally dismissed in early 4th century by the Constantine the Great (r. 306–337) when they sided with Maxentius in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (312).
