Description I am practicing drawing again. I did this next one from scratch, just using various photos as a reference. I drew it on paper first, then scanned it and painted it in using Corel painter.

It is a scene from the Star Wars Book Bloodlines by Karen Traviss. In this scene Jacen tells Ben Skywalker to wait outside while he interrogates a prisoner. Ben is outside and has to endure the sound of screams for hours as Jacen brutilizes a prisoner until she dies.

Ben is about 14 years old in this book and up to this point he looked up to Jacen as his Jedi Master. Now he is a very confused young man. We can only hope that he sees the light soon and informs his father of what is going on.

Yeah...I bet he would prefer that scenario than his cousin torturing a woman to death on the other side of the door.

I think you captured this scene perfectly! I feel the same way looking at this image as I did while reading the book. (the whole screaming for Jacen to *cussing my brains out sort of ranting* and the whole almost wanting to cry because of Ben!) so Great Job!

Thank you. I still don't understand why Ben was allowed to be in the GAG. I know he is a Jedi, but he was a young teen having to work with hardened soldiers and police officers. I think it is a shame that Jedi children can't have a childhood in the novels. Poor Allana is like six or eight years old and shooting people.

At least in Phantom Menace young Anakin was shooting soldier droids.

I was saddened and felt so bad for Ben in this scene. It is almost as bad as him finding his mother dead. The novels have been so depressing lately.

He was to young to join the GAG, he really should not have been allowed, and I can't remember the exact events that led to that (it's been a while since I've read it), but I remember being unsatisfied with the reasoning given for why Ben was part of the GAG. I remember that he had changed a significant amount after the GAG that it even surprised Mara and Luke (not an easy thing to do). Jedi children get screwed out of their childhoods, no doubt. Jacen and Jaina were the closest to having a childhood, except they got stuck in situations that should have been managed by adults and they shouldn't have been involved in (the entire series with them as children bugs me to now end because of that). and Allana has never had a decent childhood, what with Jacen's whole plan about her. These poor children, glad I'm not the only one who see's these kids getting royally screwed over!

Anakin already had a pretty sucky childhood, there was no stopping that from continuing onward.

Well, Ben's strong sense of loyalty towards Jacen was, I believe at this point in the series, on the brink of being broken, but he fought against it, and it wasn't until his mothers death that it was completely obliterated. During this whole time, listening to what Jacen was doing, Ben was not only struggling with all the terror he was listening in on but was also struggling with his loyalty towards his cousin and his family. Overall, Ben's situation just increasingly gets worse after Jacen joins with... sith whats-her-name (it's been a while, can't remember her name, but its on the tip of my tongue... this is gonna bug me) and it was unfair of Jacen to put Ben through all of this.

He joined up with Lumiya. Jacen was an idiot and I expected so much more from his character. What a waste of a character.

Oh yeah, that was the name(I always forget it, which is odd considering how important she becomes to that series)! I know especially considering his parentage you'd think he would have been a much more deep character, but the author went with the Like Grandfather like Grandson thing and really threw away Jacen. Jaina didn't end up too much better I mean at least she wasn't Jacen but she still was a letdown as a character.

I am hoping that Ben or Luke learns how to flowwalk into the past and 'accidently' drops Jacen on his head shortly after birth. Maybe that will jog some sense into his brain.

You know how much I love this painting: the powerful emotions, the stark quality of the environment and the light... All combine (even without knowledge of the story) to create a deeply moving piece. As to the art itself, the pose is beautiful (and perfectly expresses this young man's anguish), and the deep shadows and contrasts all work together for effect here. I'm so glad you're venturing into freehand work again! You have a wonderful talent, and it's fantastic to see you flexing it again!

I am really looking forward to the release of the next novel.

You're very very welcome! I think Luke has a pretty good idea about Jacen, if not actual knowledge of specific events. He just isn't doing much about it at this point. Mara seems to be purposely ignoring some things though. I hope Leia and Han start talking to Luke again.

Yes, the next book looks soooo good, doesn't it?!

Yeah, I think it comes out on 28 November. Every year I try different internet venders hoping to get the one that mails out early, but I never pick the right one. It is frustrating when your friends get the book a week early and they are dying to give you spoilers.

Do you not have any local bookstores carrying Star wars, then? Sometimes my univ's bookstore will have books out a little early, but if not, I can find them on release at some other bookstore in town. As far as online goes, Amazon is actually pretty good about shipping my books early so I get them on release day.

AG88 In reply to Kaeyin [2006-11-13 05:09:18 +0000 UTC]

I have a Borders book store. When the last Dark Nest book was released I went to the store and it wasn't there. I asked for it and they said, "Oh that must have came in that big shipment yesterday. We will probably have it on the shelf in three or four days. We have a whole lot to unpack."

I was pretty ticked off because my friends got theirs shipped early from Wal-Mart.com and were half-way done.

So then for the next book I ordered from Wal-Mart.com and they send me back a message saying they didn't have enough in stock for my order, I could wait or I could cancel the order and buy from somebody else. So I cancel the order and ordered from Amazon. Then I get a message from Wal-mart saying my order has been shipped. So I ended up with two copies of Betrayal. Wal-Mart offered to refund my money, but I ended up sending it to a friend in Europe who couldn't get the book for a few months in their country.

So, to make a long story short.... I have no luck at all when it comes to buying books online or at the bookstore.

Thank you!!

It is a horrific time for poor Ben. He is starting to realize that his beloved cousin and mentor is slowly slipping to the darkside... or at least he realizes Jacen is definately not doing the right thing.

It is also a time of reflection for him. I think he may be wondering if he is up to being a Jedi. Not because of any lacking in his Force ability, but because he realizes a Jedi often is forced to kill... and Ben realizes he doesn't like killing people.

I would highly recommend the Legacy of the Force series of books that are coming out now.

Thanks for the comment on the hands. I painted and repainted them over and over. I finally got them to look half-way normal. Thank you very much for noticing.

And thank you very much for the fave!!!

This is really nicely done. You manage to say so much with some a realitively simple picture. You've captured Ben really well.

I was really quite relieved in this scene, it was nice for Ben to finally see his "hero" isn't as great as he seemed to think.

God I'll be pissed if they turn Ben to the dark side.

AG88 In reply to Spaceman-Chris [2006-11-08 12:43:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!!

You and me both will be pissed if Ben turns to the darkside. As you can probably tell, I am a Luke/Mara fan, so I would be really upset if the powers-that-be decide to turn Luke's only son to the darkside. I have been reading the Legacy comic books that take place about 90 years after Bloodlines, and so far it doesn't look like it is the case. Although, they seem to be going out of the way to keep that option open.

I agree that it was good for Ben to see his mentor is not the good guy he imagined. I am just hoping that after he tells his parents about the man Ben killed, that he continues and tells them all about what Jacen is doing. I think if Mara knew Jacen was torturing prisoners she wouldn't be so gungho about having her young son train with Solo.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting and thank you for the fave!!

Spaceman-Chris In reply to AG88 [2006-11-09 06:25:10 +0000 UTC]

I am annoyed with the way they are writing Luke and Mara... particularly Mara, I can't see her being some complacent and so easily accepting that Jacen is just having a rough patch with a girl, and leaving it with that. You'd think after nearly losing Ben before he was even born would give her a fairly protective feeling towards him.

I am going to read Legacy when they release it in trade paperback format... I'd guess they'd keep the option open since they either don't know whether he goes to the dark side or they want to keep it a surprise for when/if it happens.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AG88 In reply to Spaceman-Chris [2006-11-09 12:01:12 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Mara's portrayal in Bloodlines in the only thing I really don't like in the book. But I am going to reserve criticism until I read a little more in the series. It could very well be that Mara is supposed to be acting out-of-character because she is being influenced by either Jacen or Lumiya.

But let us say she isn't being influenced by those two... I was thinking about it and, although I want to think Mara is acting out of character, she may be written correctly. Afterall, Mara owes a whole lot to Jacen. So her graditude my be blinding her to what he is doing. I think she really loves her nephew and doesn't want to believe he can do wrong. Afterall, this is the man who saved Luke from the brink of death. Jacen also saved Mara's life during the Dark Nest books. And I am pretty sure Jacen may have saved Ben's life a few times also.

Mara could be in denial about that whole situation, which is a very human thing to do. But I think if and when Ben or Leia inform Luke that Jacen tortured and killed a prisoner... I think all bets will be off with Mara and she will pull her son away from him so fast his head will spin.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Spaceman-Chris In reply to AG88 [2006-11-09 22:28:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I think a lot hinges on this torture scene... I mean Han is already blocking Jacen out because of it, and its his only remaining son.

It will be interesting to see how they write Mara's reaction. It is possible they are writing her in a "softer" light so when she does turn against Jacen it will be all the more powerful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AG88 In reply to Spaceman-Chris [2006-11-09 23:05:55 +0000 UTC]

That is a possibility. Jacen said in one of the LOTF novels that he saw Mara as his last remaining friend. It is going to be harsh when she turns against him.
