It was one of my all time favorite shows when I was a kid. Rumor has it that they were pondering a live action remake, now that would be worth paying 8 bucks a ticket just to see how well they did on it. I think you did great on this one. Love that ship.

That would be cool, especially with todays fill technology. I watched this all the time when I was a kid, even own the original japanese movie (way better). Also a big fan of Captain Herlock, the ship influence sucks me in every time.

Peanuts, Bloom County and Yamato. These are the three things that, at a young age, fostered my love of comics. I'm quite happy to see this in your gallery. I've never much revisited this series, but it's impact on me was indelible. I imagine I would never have written scripts or worked for the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art had I not come across the comics at a neighbors garage sale one summer. It was amazing. I'll have to try to retrieve them. And, I've never seen the cartoon, I'm at the website now, debating how much of the next paycheck I can devote to recapturing my childhood. You've done very well with this, and made me quite happy.

Me too, as well as a large dose of Dr. Who. I made this because I got my hands on the original 2 hour movie that spawned the television series. I grew up watching the show daily but never knew how awesome the movie really was because all we ever got was the americanized version. When I get done with school, I'd like to pursue this art medium some more, after much practice, of course. Yamato influenced so many series down the road and is such a great source for inspiration.

Well done! Sigh, I'm going to finally invest in the dvd collectors series season 1 in the upcoming weeks. Been away too long from it. This was my favorite animated series (much too good to call it cartoon) and I was so dedicated to it that i recorded episodes in the only way available in the early 80's, I still have about ten episodes recorded sound only on cassette tapes, LOL. I didn't need the videos, they were all stuck in my head, still are. I always loved the Argo, great ship and great show. Very good render.

Thank you. If you ever see it, grab the original version "Space Battleship Yamato." It doesn't have a translation so you have to read the subtitles but it's a movie of the original season. What I like about it is the dialogue is more military in approach so it merges with the story more efficiently.
I grew up watching this series. One day I would like to add more to my gallery from all the various ships that they had.

To me, it looks amazing for a first try! It's so smooth. ^^
I only know the title 'Space Battleship Yamato' from its music, which is great by the way.

Thanks. I want to do another one but not really sure what and I need to do a lot more reading on techniques first.

this looks a bit like my old learning attempts at shading. Is that the battleship Yamato or did I miss something? I heard about it many times but never saw it. The real Yamato was the largest battleship ever built, and served and was sunk in World War 2.
Constructive critique:
1. There's a (most likely) perspective error on the nose. The 'cavity' which is higher up on the nose, the horizontal lines should be exactly horizontal (considering the one point perspective you seem to be using). now it looks like the nose is a bit twisted/rotated to it's right, if you understand what I mean.
2. Ah the shading! It's extremely typical of people who are starting to learn about more hardcore realistic shading - it's too flat. You were too careful Which is the typical part. People don't dare to try too much as they are afraid they will mess it up. In reality, this is space, and there's probably just one lightsource. It's possible that half the ship or MORE should be almost pure black in this picture. Here's a link that explains more on light physics as well as tons of other things, really informational: [link]
I also recommend looking at Ryan Church's instructional videos from [link] - the matte vehicles and the shiny vehicles, they teach a lot about shading and such.
3. The planet is also a bit flat shaded (But not nearly like the ship).
I have a couple of large ships in space, one with a planetoid behind it, in my gallery. You can sort of see how I did the ships there with the shading if you'd want, they are fairly correct.

very nice design. I really like the blending and the color. the sub design is a little out of place but it adds a greater focus and emphasis on it. So it evens out the difference in style. Very nice. Keep up the good work.

A real departure from your usual style, but pretty nifty for something new. I like the strong perspective and bold colors. I missed the series, but it sounds like it was a fun and interesting story!

Oh Hell yeah It was! "In the year 2199, Earth was under severe attack from the mysterious Planet 'Gamelous'. Planet bombs covered the Earth with radioactive pollution. As a result, in one years' time ... EARTH WILL BE UNLIVEABLE! But on the distant planet Iscandar there is a machine that can remove the deadly radioactivity. .... Can the Star Force travel 144,000 light-years and back ... in just one Earth Year?"
That's how our story begins.

Thanks. I used this [link] to get the line art. I need to find some coloring and shading tuts but someone gave me some links that I'm going to take a look at. It's an artform that is so alien to me it was all a learning experience but I had fun and want to do more of these.

I like it, but then I don't mind the combination of 2 medias. For those who don't, I recommend making another layer (nebula with transparancy) and it might soften you line drawing. Of course it might also goof you your planet, so try cloning it in.

Thanks. I thought about doing the gun being charged but figured I'd need to add a ton of extra things to make people understand why they were firing it so I went with this instead. Once I get some more experience I'd like to do some of the other ships as well, especially the fighter.

Yeah, those fighters were awesome looking. You might want to try the "seamless plane" they used in that one episode.
