I always wondered why we never know so much about Meg's past in the film. If only the writers had given out a hint or a clue that Meg was a princess, I'd buy it.

Totally agree. They missed a huge opportunity, then again there's too much murder and incest so I can see why they tried to stay clear of it.

Thanks! I was going more for the Greek myth where her father is King Creon; however, one of the Disney Encyclopedias does acknowledge that her father is a king even though she's not in the official princess lineup.

Megara is based off Deianeira, Herakles' final (Mortal, before Hebe) wife. In mythology Deianeira was the cause of Herakles' death, some time beforehand Deianeira was abducted by Nessus, who was killed when Herakles used arrows poisoned by hydra blood. Nessus tricked Deianeira by telling her that his blood was magical and can be used to ensure that Herakles would never stop loving her (or some bullshit like that), anyway rumours spread that Deianeira will have a rival for Herakles' love and she uses the blood on his tunics. However, the blood is tainted by the Hydra's blood from Heracles' arrows, and this poisons him, Deianeira took her own life in remorse and Hercules, seeing no future for himself, instructed his son Hyllos to take him to Mount Oite and burn his body on a funeral pyre. In the event, Hyllos was unable to start the fire, and it was left to Philoctetes (in exchange for Hercules' bow and arrows) to seal the hero’s fate. Immortality was assured, though, when Athena descended in her chariot and took Hercules from the flames to Mount Olympus where he married the goddess Hebe, was given the gift of eternal youth, and permitted to reside with the gods for all time.
Hence why the movie has Megara die, followed by Hercules' 'death' causing him to regain godhood by retrieving Megara's soul. Hades being knocked into the Pyriphlegethon River is reminiscent of the time when Heracles shot Hades with an arrow when Hades came to Cerberus' aid when Herakles was instructed to abduct him (They make a deal that Herakles can only take him if he's able to subdue Cerberus without weapons and he brings the dog back unharmed. Which he does.).
