Description     The Tribe had only been on these foreign shores but a few hours. They needed to know the layout of the land, needed to know if any threats lay nearby. So they'd sent Hiccup as their scout. He'd been wandering the valleys and hills around his father's camp for hours. Everything he saw, he marked in his journal. A small but comprehensive map was quickly coming together. By the chill in the air and the fog that blanketed the ground, Hiccup knew this land was starting to succumb to the grasp of winter. His tribe would need to establish themselves quickly. They'd need good shelter and food in abundance if most of them were to survive the coming season. They shouldn't have made such a journey this late in the year, but they'd had no choice.
He was about to call for Toothless to fetch him and bring him back to his people. But then, he distinctly heard the thunderous drum of hooves striking the ground. He turned, peering through the thick fog. A shadow was coming towards him from the trees. He heard a screeching whinny. And then, from the mist, a huge black shape galloped towards him. Hiccup only had a moment to throw himself aside out of the creature's path. The wet grass hit his face and the hard earth nearly winded him. He twisted to look up, and for a moment thought he was looking upon Sleipnir himself. The horse was absolutely enormous, a behemoth of muscle and flowing black hair. The snort of its nose was as deep as any dragons'. Its hooves churned up the earth as the rider pulled on the reigns.
Cloaked and hooded, Hiccup didn't recognise them at first. But in their hand, they held an elegant bow, an arrow notched. As the horse came to a stop beside Hiccup, huge hooves pawing the ground, the rider gave a frustrated huff and threw back the hood of the cloak.
It... It was a woman. Her face was round and dotted with freckles like the shadows of stars. Her eyes blue like a clear sky, and as she pulled down her hood, the sun just crested the mountains and shone through her red hair, making it dance like fire. Hiccup was entranced.
"Ye tryin' ta get ye head cracked or summat, ye wally?" she asked, her accent was thick but her expression made her meaning quite clear. "Don't ye know there's Vikings aboot?"
That brought Hiccup slamming back to reality. He gulped. "Err, um, n-n-no... I-I hadn't."
"Now ye do. Best be off home, ye hear?" And she looked him in the eye, her lips twitching into a hint of a smile. Hiccup thought he'd lost the ability to breathe. "What's ye name?"
"H-H-Hiccup." He coughed, cursing his abruptly squeaky voice. "What's yours?"
"I'm Merida of Clan DunBroch." She said with a proud flick of her wild hair. She turned to see the position of the sun, and adjusted the reigns on her horse. "We best be off, Angus. Goodbye, Hiccup! Ye take care now!"
And with a thrust of her heels, her horse roared and raced away into the mist. They vanished so quickly, Hiccup half believed he'd dreamed the event. "Goodbye... Merida..."

I am an unashamed Mericup shipper. This was something I wanted to cook up to show my appreciation.
