"As we landed on the Beach of Skull Island, every one of the sailors to volunteer for the rescue mission came boiling out in a mob. It’s fortunate that every one of the natives had taken a place atop the Great Wall, for we had murder on our mind, and I fear a bloodbath would have ensued had they been watching their backs. However, it seems that they did not anticipate that a response would arrive so soon, and they did not even see our group racing up the beach behind them. Driscoll and I were the first to reach the giant gate, and as we peered through the bars in a small window slit in the grate on opposite sides of the wall, we got a terrifying glimpse of what we were truly up against.

A huge, hulking form, moving with a swiftness and grace that I had never seen in anything of that size, strode towards the jungle on two short legs, huge arms swinging as it loped along. Kong was a gigantic ape, at least eighteen feet tall, and possibly larger – it was hard to judge distances in the darkness, even with the torchlight. He had turned to let out a savage bellow at the cheering natives atop the wall. In the light, behind his huge grizzled torso, Jack and I saw Ann, flailing madly and apparently trying to get Kong to drop her, but she was no match for this monster. As Kong vanished into the jungle, I heard Denham barking out orders behind us – “All right, get that timber out of the wall, we’re going out there after her!” – but he had not seen the giant himself, he had no idea what we were up against…

And as I scrambled up the wall with the other sailors, I could not help but reflect that this might be for the best."
