Stumbled across this design rough t'other day... From a flashback sequence in the '99/2000 comics miniseries DIRTY PAIR: RUN FROM THE FUTURE, these are my first attempts at figuring out what Kei and Yuri would've looked like as young schoolgirls at Meizuru University (where they're supposed to have first met).

Ten years later on, the notes I wrote to myself on the piece are a tad cryptic, but the "Noriko" references for young Yuri's design are a nod to GUNBUSTER's lead character. By Kei's feet, the notes are indicting that she's wearing "tabi"-style socks, meant to act kindasorta like gloves in a microgravity environment, so she can latch on to stuff with her feet. (In my version of the DPverse, Meizuru University wound up being housed on a low-gee space habitat on a smallish moon.)

Note that, in a mildly kinky scene in RUN FROM THE FUTURE #2, grown(er)-up Kei reconfigures her morphing "smartsuit" into this outfit to apprehend a criminal who wears the famous face (thanks to lookalike "celebrisurgery") of her schoolgirl-era crush, action icon "Jude Lomani"... Needless to say, 19-year-old modern-day Kei fills out the uniform a tad differently.

Of course, this is not to be confused with the back-cover sketch from RUN FROM THE FUTURE #3, which gratuitously (and worse, anachronistically!) featured Kei and Yuri in 20th-century Japanese schoolgirl outfits... Have to see if I can dig that one up some time. EDIT: No, wait, here's the illo in question!

Semi-related: At one point (8-9 years ago), I had a brilliant plan to write a DIRTY PAIR miniseries about Kei and Yuri circa age 15 or 16... BEFORE they became the Dirty Pair, technically. I hoped to have the great Chynna Clugston (of BLUE MONDAY fame) do the artwork for the comic; she even did up some verra fetching character designs for Young Kei and Yuri! Alas, like most of my brilliant plans, the project fell apart and nothing came of it, save that I grew a minute degree more bitter. (Welcome to the thrilling, failure-intensive world of comics, kids!)
