Description ... is like fires burning in the distance, with a breeze of cinnamon therein." (Walter Moers, freely translated)

this is my pencil version from an old woodcut, which I used as reference.
The original one is from Gustave Doré (*1832; +1883), a genious french book illustrator, who did popular illustrations for many books like Alighieris "Divina Commedia" (ger: Göttliche Komödie), the Bible or Miguel Cervantes' "Don Quijote", from which this one is originally.

I first read of him in Walter Moers modern fantasy novel "Wilde Reise durch die Nacht"(ger. 2003) in which the author tells a dream of the young Doré, leaded by several illustrations by Doré himself, also the one I used. Really recommendable to read.
I drawed this because I'm really fascinated of the reference, the skills (so much more than in mine!) and it's incredible details. During the whole drawing process, I discovered more of them.

So please, take this as a tribute to Doré.

P.S.: If you look closely, you can read parts of the title of the two books in front of the old guy.
To find out, what "Amadis" on the right one is standing for was quite easy (google) but does anyone of you guys have an idea, which book the left one could be, with the letters "TRAN"(if I read it correct) on it?

EDIT: Now I guess that its not "Tran" but "Tirant" at the left book (it was really difficult to read!), because "Tirant lo Blanc" is a Knight adenture story of the 15th century and one of the the books Don Quijote could save from a fire (the other one was "Amadis de Gaulle"). I'll try to correct it.

I love Don Quixote! I always loved his wild spirit of adventure and desire for chivalry. (No matter how outrageous, or how problematic it may make things for him. )

You did a really great job on this. All the details compared to the wood carving look practically perfect. I especially like all the fantastical figures popping out of the background. And I just can't help but smile at Quixote's expression and waving sword. It all works so well.

Definitely going in my favorites.

Thanks a lot.
Yes, Don Quixotes (now I write it correctly, thanks!) adventures alway make me want to go out and do something crazy even it goes totally wrong. The reference really caught the spirit of the whole story.
So thanks for comment and fave.
