Description I've been watching some documentaries about ancient Egypt lately, which inspired me to make this doodle of Hatshepsut, one of the few women who ruled Egypt as pharao and not just as queen. I'm not so pleased with it, though. I tried to make a less idealized portrait of her, bit it didn't exactly came out as I wanted. And I should have written her name in hieroglyphs. Oh, well.

Is she the one who people said was regarded as the gods as a man? I think I have read about something like that somewhere. If she's not, or if that's never happened, it might have been a Conan the Barbarian story. Nevermind me then.

Hm, I don't know actually. But she claimed it was the will of the gods that she ruled Egypt as pharao and I think she was seen as more male than female. So you could be right.

One of my all-time favourite novels was written of her. It had a very solid research to back it up, but back in those days it was a widely spread belief that she and Thutmosis the 4th were brother and sister. Which, according to some fresher source, is corrected to aunt and nephew and a more significant age gap.

In any case, I like the way you drew her.

Thank you! I've read a novel about Hatshepsut too, though it was a very long time ago. Child of the Morning by Pauline Gedge (in Swedish the title was "Daughter of the Sun"). Was that the one you read too (but I think that Hatshepsut and Thuthmosis the 4th actually are aunt and nephew in that novel and that her brother, more correctly, was Thuthmosis the 3rd)?

I read a novel by a Hungarian writtress. But I met this book yesterday in a store. There were too many Egyptian novels there, some from Jaq, whose books I utterly hate, so all in all not much reading was done. I like going to bookstores between classes, but sometimes it' s hard to find a good read.

Thutmosis the second was the half-brother of Hatshepsut who didn' t rule all that much, but he did so before her. The third was the nephew from whom she took power away and who later became a strategist pharaoh. The numbers were mixed completely.

I'd love to, but my comics usually take most of my time. Now when "A god apart from gods" soon is finished, I might get some more time to draw other stuff.

Ciara12 [2011-02-21 21:35:19 +0000 UTC]

She looks good! I like how you've done her in the sort of crown that Tutankamen wore on his death mask, rather than the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt - for one thing, it's easier to fit! Her eye make up is nice as well. I think quite a few male pharaohs looked quite feminine - more shaving of facial and body hair!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

A-gnosis In reply to Ciara12 [2011-02-22 22:04:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I think it's called nemes crown and it's definitely easier to fit.

You're right, the male pharaos could look quite feminine (the idealized statues of them did, anyway). You know, I think I've read somewhere that the Greeks actually got the hairless body ideal from Egypt from the beginning, though they never went as far as the Egyptians (who often even shaved off the hair on their heads). Too bad the Greek men was so fond of their beards. It's difficult to draw beards.
