Description A first try to draw Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, pleasure and festivity.

Dionysos was the youngest of the twelve great gods on Olympus, a son of Zeus (who else?) and the mortal woman Semele. He is sometimes described as a beautiful but effeminate youth (according to some myths he had even been brought up as a girl in an attempt to hide him away from the wrath of jealous Hera), so I thought, why not depict him as some kind of a transvetite?

His hair looks kinda strange, since he's tried to bleach it.

Crazy is the word. I love mythologies that encourage to queer interpretations.

Ooh, never thought of him like this before. Of course, the only way I've seen Dionysus (or some god very much like him anyway, probably a roman version) was as a fat drunk on a cloud, in the old Asterix movies. I really like his expression, and the necklace.

A fat drunk was the first that came to my mind too when I thought about Dionysos, but when I read that he sometimes was depicted as a pretty, effeminate youth during antiquity, I decided to focus on that instead. One of the gods just have to be absolutely fabulous and feminine.

This is said about Dionysos in Ovid's Metamorphoses:
"You have youth unfading; you’re a boy for ever; you shine the fairest in the firmament. When you lay by your horns, your countenance is like a lovely girl’s."
(Ovid was a Roman, though.)

Everyone definitely needs more fabulous. I have never heard of Ovid, though. An ancient roman poet, I guess?

That's right. He is known as Ovidius in Swedish (and I actually think that was his name in Roman too). He wrote a lot about love, which is also a common theme in his Metamorphoses, an epic poem about transformations in Greek mythology.

Thanks! Since some of the goddesses seem to be quite mannish, I thought it would be fun with a god who acts really feminine.
