You can also setup your computer to dual boot (or triple boot) with both, so that your windows xp isn't affected.

So you want to switch to linux? I suggest you try Ark Linux ( [link] ) or PC-BSD ( [link] ) , they fairly easy to install and you'll get familar to them quickly. I have both but I prefer PC-BSD because its slightly easier to use, in my opinion.
