My good friend, it has been a long time since I have seen your work. You are afflicted with a magnificent compulsive need to create. I am thrilled to see your work again. The intricate detail of your work mixed with an unexplainable violent stroke is something that i am very happy to be in the presence of again. I look forward to seeing more work from you. Don't worry cat....I know you don't remember me....if you treat your short term like i do mine.....maybe you'll recognize the work.

Dude! I totally know who you are. How the Hell have you been? It's good to see your work as well. It's totally grown since the last time I have seen it. I went through my gallery and gutted it not too long ago. I've been using my blog as a more complete archive of my work. Here's the address if you feel like swinging by www.davemahanart.blogspot.com.

Keep in touch, and keep up the good work.

Dave Mahan, I'm Wes Jackson, www.uglycouches.carbonmade.com ---- mougly.carbonmade.com ---

Dave, I have to tell you something. Your work and your ability to create and produce in such steady constance pace has always amazed me. I think that you too are blessed/cursed with an artists perspective, unexplainable and compulsive you and I have that in common. I think that you have pushed my artwork to always be more. I believe in showing appreciation to people who inspire. I'm not a great artist, or not one of the great artists. I am a creative and you've shown me I'm not alone in that. Thanks for making me feel normal. However, you could be the king of dicks in real life and truly enjoy the collected discography of Nickleback in which case I accept your faults and understand that you find art in shitty places. *cheers* to shitty art.

I totally know what you mean about the blessing/curse thing. I get a kick out of banging a ton of material out, and putting it up for people to see. It keeps me thinking on my toes, and I always get great feedback from people. On the other hand, when you put out that much material, you usually end up hating at least half of it (at least that's what happens to me). I go through phases where I will bang out at least a piece a day, and then I'll want to put more focus into my work and end up only doing 1 or 2 pieces a month. Then I get fed up with over-thinking everything, and I end up firing out things to correct that mind set. I'm sure that you can relate.

Right now, I'm doing a page in my sketchbook every day for 50 days. I'm about a month into it, and it's been going well so far. I've been posting most of my favorite ones on facebook, and I'll post them here when the project is all finished. Here's the facebook album if you feel like swinging by and checking that project out ([link] ).

Your stuff has always inspired me, too. I love seeing the people that were around when I started posting things here, still alive and creating art. To me there is nothing more inspiring than getting to know a fellow artist, and having the chance to watch them grow into their own style over time. If it makes you feel any better, I'll ask the people I know whether or not I'm a dick. I think I'm King Shit, but that doesn't really matter much lol. No worries on the Nickelback front, though. I hate that garbage.

Relate....Man I'm just amazed at your thought process and how it perfectly mirrors and explains my own. I don't think that we were put in this position in this life with these gifts to not devote ourselves to them in whatever way life gives us the opportunity to do so. Your pics on the war journal are epic. You will do 50/50 I can guarantee that. Your technique is growing and flourishing in a very uniquely strong way.

I am in Oklahoma, and in the midst of the worst blizzard in our history. When I tell you that your technique for snow and stars is spot on know that I have a reference. You've really captured the loneliness and despair of a heavy snow that seals you in....well....just know that you have that ability and you use it very professionally.

I look forward to your new work.

All hail his regency king shit.

Been awhile (or at least it seems so). Your latest has me thinking that a collage graphic 'novel' (no actually narrative except what can be gleaned from the images) would be cool.

workweak In reply to almcdermid [2010-12-27 17:43:31 +0000 UTC]

It has been a while. A collage fueled graphic novel would be awesome. Something like the Edward Gorey stories without any words would be awesome. It would be cool to leave things open for interpretation. I think you could only achieve that with collage or photography.

I was thinking about the 'layers' of commercialization that support us, layers that are both audio and visual. What if you brought those layers to the service in the way you suggest, with some words perhaps, but certainly no narrative. How would you connect such a thing to Gorey; what is it his works that relates to this idea?

workweak In reply to almcdermid [2011-01-03 14:31:15 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting. I think it's funny to mention commercialization keeping in mind that most independent artists seem to have a chip on their shoulder about commercialization and how it "invades their work". As a collage artist, I don't know what I would do without it. The bulk of my work incorporated vintage advertisements, and some sort of satire of the commercial-minded. Also, it's interesting to think of how easy it is for artists like you and I to create some sort of shop (I have an etsy shop, but I know there are a lot of other similar sites) where we can sell artwork made from elements that were used to sell things to use in the first place. I think creating some kind of collage project that comments on the layers of commercialization that support us would be fun and very insightful.

The Edward Gorey works that I was thinking of are his "The Nursery Frieze" where it is a single figure repeated multiple times with different text banners in it's mouth every time. The words are mostly unrecognizable to the common person, so it almost has a sort of "They Live" element to it, where you have to really stop and pay attention to it to realize what he is saying. Other works such as "Leaves from a Mislaid Album" are more along the lines of "pin-up" drawings of single characters in Victorian garb, without any sort of accompanying text. This leaves the subject open to a wide array of interpretation. You are forced to not only look at the visual elements of the drawing, but also the way it sits in context with all the other images in the sequence. One could look at "Leaves..." as just a collection of drawings, but with Gorey things are never really that simple. I think it is also interesting to note that he tends to draw a lot of people wearing fur coats, and Victorian era suits, but he lived in a quaint little house in Yarmouth, MA.

I grew up not too far from the Edward Gorey house, on Cape Cod. The small artist community on Cape is fairly intertwined, and as I would talk to artists who were older than me, I would often hear stories about him, and what an interesting guy he was.

This point (most independent artists seem to have a chip on their shoulder about commercialization and how it "invades their work") is an interesting because many art school grads who mouth this still no problem asking 10K for a piece they did school, and doing so with a straight face. The pop artist do this, but are at least honest about the commercialization; it's part of our world so deal with it.

I like the idea of commenting "on the layers of commercialization that support us" but in truth, I don't really approach collage in any systematic way. Or if I do, it's not to do this. The only times I made collages with anything of a real plan was when I created Rocket Girl, Red Cafe, and Dream Aquarium, wherein the magazine material was my 'paint' [link] I then shifted to doing pieces more similar to what other collagists here are doing. I'd like to move back to that, but don't really have the space. Would also like to do some similar to yours (space-wise, that may be possible).

Still very interested in the graphic novel idea, but not really sure how to approach it. Start with some collages, or a collage and work toward a narrative. Some might make it easier to follow. Perhaps if the magazines were arranged chronologically (from the 50s to the 70s for example), a narrative might emerge.
