Thomas JeffersonĀ (April 13 [O.S. Ā April 2]Ā 1743Ā ā July 4, 1826) was an AmericanĀ Founding Father Ā who was the principal author of theĀ Declaration of Independence Ā and later served as theĀ third President of the United States Ā from 1801 to 1809. Previously, he wasĀ elected theĀ second Vice President of the United States , serving underĀ John Adams Ā from 1797 to 1801. A proponent of democracy,Ā republicanism , and individual rights motivatingĀ American colonists Ā to break from Great Britain and form a new nation, he produced formative documents and decisions at both the state and national level. He was a land owner and farmer.
Jefferson was primarily of English ancestry, born and educated inĀ colonial Virginia . He graduated from theĀ College of William & Mary and briefly practiced law, at times defending slaves seeking their freedom. During theĀ American Revolution , he represented Virginia in theĀ Continental Congress Ā that adopted the Declaration, drafted the law for religious freedom as a Virginia legislator, and he served as a wartime governor (1779ā1781). He became the United States Minister to France in May 1785, and subsequently the nation's firstĀ Secretary of State Ā in 1790ā1793 underĀ President George Washington . Jefferson andĀ James Madison Ā organized theĀ Democratic-Republican Party Ā to oppose theĀ Federalist Party Ā during the formation of theĀ First Party System . With Madison, he anonymously wrote the controversialĀ Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions Ā in 1798ā1799, which sought to emboldenĀ states' rights Ā in opposition to the national government by nullifying theĀ Alien and Sedition Acts .

Alexander HamiltonĀ (January 11, 1755 or 1757Ā ā July 12, 1804) was an American statesman and one of theĀ Founding Fathers of the United States . He was an influential interpreter and promoter of theĀ U.S. Constitution , as well as the founder of the nation's financial system, theĀ Federalist Party , theĀ United States Coast Guard , andĀ The New York Post Ā newspaper. As the firstĀ Secretary of the Treasury , Hamilton was the main author of the economic policies of theĀ George Washington administration . He took the lead in the funding of the states' debts by theĀ Federal government , as well as theĀ establishment of a national bank , a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Britain. His vision included a strong central government led by a vigorous executive branch, a strong commercial economy, with a national bank and support for manufacturing, plus a strong military.Ā Thomas Jefferson Ā was his leading opponent, arguing for agrarianism and smaller government.
Hamilton was born out of wedlock inĀ Charlestown ,Ā Nevis . Orphaned as a child he was taken in by a prosperous merchant. As a precocious young teenager he was sent to New York to pursue his education. Hamilton took an early role as theĀ American Revolutionary War Ā began. In 1777, he became a senior aide to General Washington in running the newĀ Continental Army . After the war, Hamilton was elected as a representative to theĀ Congress of the Confederation Ā from New York. He resigned to practice law, and founded theĀ Bank of New York .
