Certainly! Start with scraps and work on your stitching and shaping first. Especially if you want to do water hardened stuff, wax hardened pieces, etc. Everything else is really trial and error. Just make sure your needles, knives, and awls are always sharp!

good idea. Practice practice. yes. What is water hardened? and wax hardened? I dont know....anything about these things. haha.
OK, if I was going to start, what equipment would you suggest for a complete amateur?

First you'll need a sharp x-acto or utility knife, steel scissors, an awl, needles, and waxed thread. With those things you can do pretty much anything. You can even make your own awl out of a steel nail and a file. I did this and placed it in an antler tine handle and I use it for my tooling.
Water and Wax hardening are processes that thicken the leather, making it stiffer. The trick is, wax hardening makes the leather thicker, but also easier to cut (Since wax is a lubricant). Water hardening makes the leather hard and stiff as a board, but it'll cause the surface to crack if you try to bend it without oiling it a bit.
Also, you'll want to look at the leather you get. It's all measured in ounces, the higher the ounce, the thicker the leather. I'm working with 2-4 ounce leather for my pouches (The 4 ounce is a little too thick, though) and I've used 10 oz on my bracers.
